"...So dawn goes down to day.
Nothing gold can stay."
— Robert Frost (1874–1963)
Over the years, technology has been evolving rapidly. Things once considered "new" or "innovative" can quickly become "old" or "outdated." These changes can happen in many ways, but the overall trend is the same: as time goes on, all things are at risk of disappearing someday.
While it may seem like an impossible (and sometimes pointless) task, that hasn't stopped many people from taking it upon themselves to preserve what others would consider less important.
There are many facets to preservation, and emulation plays a key role among them by documenting old programs and allowing them to run on modern devices (because what's the point of archiving a bunch of old games if you have no way of playing them?). Because emulation is so often associated with preservation, this page highlights some other projects with similar goals relating to video games and technology, some of which can even be used in conjunction with emulation.

Nevertheless, it's an important piece of history. Currently, they have 40000 games preserved in its records and 30000 related items (books, reviews, catalogues, bonus CDs, etc.) in physical form. Members separate game elements (tape, disk, cover art, manual, etc.), store, then produce digital master data out of it for use by future generations. Similarly, the UK petition, which closed on July 14, 2025, exceeded 100,000 signatures, earning a parliamentary debate. These efforts underscored the growing movement to protect consumer rights in gaming, aligning with broader preservation goals by advocating for playable games even after official servers shut down. |

Revival projects
editAs the internet has become more readily available over time, a lot of companies have experimented with adding online services to their products (see Early online services). However, because of how dependent these features can be on a single company or server they are at high risk of disappearing once the service gets shut down. #Private Game Servers, especially for MMOs are at risk as the entirety of the game is based on playing online. If the game has no way of allowing the user to host their own private server then once the service ends, so does the game. This will especially be a problem in the future as more and more games are becoming more dependent on online services. Other than MMOs, private game server revive projects (or server emulators) particularly important for preserving online experiences in AAA games where big publishers are already notorious for using intrusive copy protection, acquiring IPs and developers and then turning them to zombies, instead of using or turning their games to P2P-based online infrastructure they are shutting down their own custom/private servers. Revival projects ensure these kind of online experiences, aren't lost to history. Depending on interest and importance, there has been a surprising amount of fans who have come together to keep a service and/or game experience alive.

Private game servers
editStrictly speaking, a private server is any machine or virtual machine that is privately administered and used as a server. Colloquially, however, the term is used almost exclusively to refer to independently operated, unofficial servers for video games. These shouldn't be confused with LAN tunneling (LAN multiplayer over the internet) or with offline multiplayer gaming over a LAN/local connection. Games built on P2P infrastructure are included here for informational purposes, to document their availability, even though the primary focus is on private servers. While some of the games listed below use peer-to-peer (P2P) infrastructure, they may still rely on a private server for the authentication phase; and a game having a dedicated private server for online features doesn't necessarily mean it supports matchmaking. Online features vary from game to game and can include leaderboards, user-generated content, clans, and more. Some games may support only a subset of the platform service functionalities, such as Live Aware from Xbox Live (e.g. Red Dead Revolver, Neighbours from Hell).
Remember: for games with online features that don't support online matchmaking, or that lack a revived private server, LAN multiplayer can still be an option if the game supports it. You can use LAN tunneling software to play with friends over the internet. If none of these options are available, consider local co-op if the game supports it, especially in combination with streaming software for playing with friends over the internet.
- Take a look at this before adding a game to this list, and have a look at the other related lists as well. You can also see the StopKillingGames: Dead Game List Spreadsheet for a list similar to this one. Lastly, we recommend checking out the #See also and #External links sections.

| RuneScape 2 | ✓ RuneScape 2 is the successor to RuneScape Classic, released on March 29, 2004. It received a High Detail overhaul on July 1, 2008 and was succeeded by the Evolution of Combat on November 20, 2012 and the release of RuneScape 3 on July 22, 2013, which is the current major release of the main RuneScape game. On February 22, 2013, Jagex released Old School RuneScape (OSRS), which is a legacy release of a backup from August 10, 2007 with new content and updates added to the game alongside the main game. Before and even after the release of OSRS, there have been many private servers based on RuneScape 2. |

| RuneScape Classic | ✗ While RuneScape Classic would be succeeded by RuneScape 2 on March 29, 2004, some of the servers for RuneScape Classic were active for all players until August 4, 2005, where Jagex closed down the free version of RuneScape Classic due to widespread rule violations but was still opened for membership subscribers. After February 3, 2006, due to more widespread rule violations, only accounts that had logged in since the free servers were shut down could log in.[21] Jagex has re-opened RuneScape Classic several times between 2009 and 2016,[22] and RuneScape Classic was ultimately shut down indefinitely after August 6, 2018.[23] There are many private servers based on RuneScape Classic but the most authentic/vanilla RSC experience currently active is the RSC Preservation server in OpenRSC. For an enhanced RuneScape Classic experience with new content added over time, RSCRevolution is recommended. Other private servers could be found on the r/RSPS subreddit, but most servers on there are based on RuneScape 2. |

Proxy projects for retro web browsing
editThese kinds of projects usually retrieve pages from the Internet Archive Wayback Machine or OoCities and deliver them in their original form, stripped of the toolbars, scripts, and other extraneous content that can confuse retro web browsers.[28] They're especially useful for retro web browsing with DOS-based, Windows 1.0x/2x/3x series, Windows 9x series, Windows NT 3.X, NT 4.0, Windows 2000, Windows XP, Windows Vista, and macOS emulators and Hypervisors, or even
web browsers on old home consoles. Otherwise, you can still use pure-HTML websites such as: DreamPipe, thebaratusii, toastytech, TheBlueOSMuseum, LuxuryAerozona, DreamProject Legacy, DOSBox Deathmatch Club, GuidebookGallery, MDGx, Ralf Brown's Interrupt List, Doom2.net, and PowerDVD3000.

Preservation issues
editPreservation's reliance on reverse engineering, community contributions, and the rare occurrence of source-code leaks underscores the precarious and often incomplete nature of preservation efforts. The overall outlook is acknowledged to be challenging, requiring significant dedication and frequently running into substantial limitations.
Let's summarize the general process, for anyone who wants to learn the basics of reverse-engineering private servers.
- Online-based Flash software example
The preservation of online-based Flash games, which often relied on constant server connectivity, presents unique challenges for the preservation community. Unlike standalone games, these titles depend on both client-side code (typically in Flash) and server-side infrastructure, along with a multitude of external resource files.
A key obstacle in reviving these games post-shutdown lies not in emulating the game server itself, but rather in acquiring the necessary client-side assets. These assets encompass a wide range of media, including:
- Textures: Visual elements that define the appearance of in-game objects and environments.
- Music and Sound Effects: Audio components that contribute to the game's atmosphere and feedback.
- Flash Libraries (.swf files): Compiled ActionScript code containing game logic, animations, and user interface elements.
Upon the discontinuation of these online Flash games, the servers hosting these external resource files are typically taken offline, rendering the assets inaccessible. The Flash game client would dynamically request these files as needed during gameplay. Consequently, unless individuals proactively backed up these resources, they were often lost for good.
The potential for recovering these assets through network traffic analysis, such as packet dumps or HTTP archives, has largely remained unrealized. While tools like Fiddler and Charles Proxy were popular for in-game cheating and could export HTTP archives containing communication between the game and server, including asset transfers (if conducted over HTTP), such archives have rarely surfaced publicly for these defunct games.
Despite these significant hurdles, some preservation efforts have found a glimmer of hope in the Flash Shared Object Cache (SOL). Certain Flash games used this local storage mechanism on users' computers to cache assets, aiming to reduce bandwidth consumption. If these cached files were not deleted by the user, they can potentially be recovered.
The "Raise the Empires" project, dedicated to reviving the Zynga Facebook game Empires & Allies (2011), serves as a prime example of this. The project managed to gain traction through the recovery of assets from a single user's SOL cache. However, even in this relatively successful case, the project still faces significant gaps in its asset library, which may hinder the full restoration of every game feature.
Building on this experience, efforts are now underway to preserve other online Flash games facing imminent shutdown. One such project focuses on Tanki Online, a 3D multiplayer game slated to discontinue its Flash version in October 2025. The goal is to develop a server emulator and, crucially, to explore avenues for acquiring the necessary client-side assets for its continued playability.
Ultimately, the long-term vision of such preservation projects is often to integrate their findings and tools into broader initiatives like Bluemaxima's Flashpoint, a comprehensive web game preservation project. The challenges faced in preserving online Flash games underscore the critical importance of proactive data archiving and community collaboration in ensuring the longevity of digital game history.
- MMO-based titles example
While the preservation of online Flash games faces significant hurdles related to client-side asset acquisition, the challenges associated with preserving Massively Multiplayer Online games (MMOs) are primarily rooted in the complexity of the server-side infrastructure and logic.
As highlighted in the previous discussion on Flash games, obtaining client-side assets (textures, models, audio, etc.) is crucial. Techniques like recovering data from local caches, analyzing packet captures, and leveraging any available data mines can provide valuable resources. However, for MMOs, even with a complete set of client assets, the core functionality may reside on the game servers.
The fundamental obstacles in MMO preservation include:
- Server-Side Logic: MMO servers handle intricate game logic, including:
- NPC Behavior: Artificial intelligence governing non-player characters, their interactions, and their role in the game world.
- World Simulation: Rules governing the game environment, physics (if applicable), and persistent states.
- Game Events and Quests: The dynamic content and progression systems that drive player engagement.
- Player Interactions: Managing communication, trading, combat, and other forms of interaction between thousands of concurrent players.
- Account Management and Persistence: Storing player data, progress, and inventories.
- Protocol Emulation and Cryptography: While dedicated efforts can reverse-engineer the communication protocols between client and server and decipher encryption methods, this is a complex and time-consuming process that requires significant technical expertise.
- Asset Recreation: Even if communication protocols are understood, recreating server-generated or server-managed assets (such as dynamic quest data or procedurally generated content) without access to the original server-side code or extensive data is virtually impossible.
The availability of material to work with is paramount for successful MMO preservation. This includes:
- Packet Captures: Recordings of the network traffic between the game client and the server, providing insights into communication patterns and data structures.
- Asset Dumps: Extracted files from either the client or, in rare cases, leaked server data, containing models, textures, scripts, and other resources.
- Caches: Locally stored data that might contain partial information about game states or assets.
- Videos and Screenshots: Visual documentation that can aid in understanding game mechanics and environments.
- Datamining Efforts: Community-driven analysis of game files to extract information about game systems and assets.
The ideal scenario for accurate MMO preservation is a leak of the server-side source code. This provides a complete blueprint of the game's logic and allows for the most faithful recreation. Notable examples of MMOs where source-code leaks have significantly aided private server efforts include City of Heroes, Star Wars Galaxies (SWG), and Alliance of Valiant Arms (AVA).
By contrast, there is significantly less interest in, and likelihood of, source-code leaks for less technically complex online games, such as older Facebook web games. Furthermore, the very existence of readily accessible server-side source code for such games is questionable, as their architecture may have been less modular and more tightly integrated into proprietary platforms.
- Recreating Multiplayer Components
The revival of the multiplayer functionality of older AA or AAA titles requires the creation of private game servers. This process, as exemplified by the recreation of the Metal Gear Online (PS2, 2006) server, involves a significant amount of reverse engineering and technical expertise. The fundamental steps and challenges can be broken down as follows:
1. Traffic Redirection: The initial step is to redirect network traffic from the original, defunct game servers to the newly created private server. This often involves modifying the game client's configuration or using network-level techniques like DNS manipulation.
2. Communication Protocol Understanding: A crucial aspect is deciphering the communication protocol the game client uses to interact with the server. This involves analyzing the network packets exchanged during gameplay in order to understand the structure and format of the data being transmitted. Tools like network sniffers (e.g. Wireshark) are essential for capturing and examining this traffic.
3. Payload Analysis: Once the basic protocol structure is understood, the next step is to analyze the payloads of the packets — the actual game data being exchanged. This involves determining the meaning and purpose of the different data fields within the packets.
Leveraging Available Data: The process of understanding payloads is significantly aided by access to packet captures from the original game. As seen with Resident Evil Outbreak, a substantial packet capture allows developers to observe the input (client actions) and the corresponding output (server responses), enabling them to deduce the meaning of the data being exchanged.
Hypothetical Example (Inspired by Metal Gear Online): Consider a scenario where a client sends a packet with a command ID of 0x4301 and data 0x0000000B. By observing that this packet is sent when a player attempts to view a game's information, one can reasonably assume that 0x4301 represents a "request game information" command, and that 0x0000000B is the unique identifier (game ID) of the game being queried. By analyzing other packets related to game lists, this hypothesis can be further validated.
The server's response to such a request might be a large blob of data containing various numbers and strings. The next step involves tampering with this known-good data and observing how the changes are reflected in the game client. This iterative process helps to identify the meaning of individual data fields within the response, such as player counts, game modes, map names, and other relevant information.
Challenges in the Absence of Data: Without packet captures or known-good data, the process becomes considerably more complex. Developers must rely on logical deduction, observation of in-game behavior, and educated guesses about the purpose of different data transmissions. Examining how similar functionality is implemented in other parts of the game can provide valuable clues.
The Metal Gear Online Experience: The Metal Gear Online server recreation project highlights the iterative nature of this work. While an incomplete packet capture allowed for an initial understanding of the basic protocol (which was unique to Konami), significant gaps existed for features like viewing statistics, joining games, and creating games. This necessitated a combination of packet analysis and educated guesswork.
A key breakthrough involved recognizing patterns in packet structures. For instance, the format observed for the game-list request and response (a client request followed by several server responses containing game data and status indicators) was successfully applied to decipher the friends and blacklist functionalities.
More Advanced Techniques: More challenging aspects, such as understanding the data exchange during the game-joining process, often require more advanced techniques. In the case of Metal Gear Online, this involved memory dumping from the PlayStation 2 emulator (PCSX2) and analyzing the game's code segments to understand how the client parsed the network protocol and what data it expected from the server. Examining the memory locations responsible for handling different packet types proved particularly helpful.
The Nature of the Work: Ultimately, recreating private game servers is a multifaceted endeavor that combines:
- Luck: Serendipitous discoveries and insights.
- Guesswork: Informed estimations based on observed behavior and limited data.
- Code Analysis: In-depth examination of game executables and memory to understand the underlying logic.
- Persistence: Overcoming frustration and the often slow pace of progress.
The Metal Gear Online project, which took over ten months to achieve functional multiplayer after the initial single-player server setup, underscores the significant time and effort involved.
Regional Differences and Protocol Variations: The final point worth mentioning is the complexity of regional variations in network protocols. Although Metal Gear Online surprisingly used the same core protocol across all regions — the North American and Japanese versions could even interoperate — the PAL (European) version had compatibility issues. This shows that even with a seemingly unified protocol, subtle differences in implementation or in regional server configurations can create significant challenges for interoperability in private server environments. The underlying reasons for such differences (e.g. KDDI vs. SNAP network services, as mentioned in the original context) can be complex and require further investigation.
See this blog post for more on this.
- Private Game Server Recreation
The process of recreating private game servers, while challenging, involves systematic exploration and deduction. The initial success in identifying a few command IDs and their functions naturally leads to the question of how to uncover the remaining communication elements.
Strategies for Uncovering Server Functionality: Beyond the initial discovery of command IDs and basic interactions, a range of techniques can be employed to map the broader landscape of server functionality:
- Pattern Recognition: Identifying recurring structures in packet headers, payloads, and server responses across different game actions can reveal underlying design principles and the purpose of unknown commands.
- Contextual Analysis: Correlating in-game player actions with the resulting network traffic provides crucial clues about the purpose and content of specific packets.
- Error Message Analysis: Server-generated error messages can inadvertently disclose information about expected data formats, valid command IDs, or the stage of processing at which issues arise.
- Client Disassembly: Analyzing the game client's executable code (often in assembly language) can expose how the client constructs network requests and interprets server responses, revealing expected command IDs, payload structures, and even encryption details.
- Memory Analysis: Examining the game's memory during network operations can reveal the data being processed and how it is organized, which is particularly useful for understanding complex interactions like joining game sessions.
- Targeted Brute-Force Testing: While exhaustive brute-forcing is often impractical, systematically testing ranges of command IDs and observing server responses or error messages can sometimes help identify valid commands.
The Power of Packet Captures in Roadmap Creation: With access to packet captures, the task of reverse-engineering the server becomes significantly more manageable. These logs offer a roadmap of the communication flow, revealing the sequence of requests and responses for various in-game actions. By meticulously inspecting these captures, developers can begin to:
- Identify Command IDs: Determine the numerical or symbolic identifiers that indicate the type of action being requested or the information being transmitted.
- Analyze Data Payloads: Examine the structure and content of the data carried within each packet, observing how different in-game events translate into specific byte sequences.
- Trace Client-Server Interactions: Understand the expected sequence of communication for different game functionalities, such as player login, game joining, in-game actions, and data synchronization.
The process then becomes one of systematically "poking and prodding" the captured data to decipher the meaning of individual bytes or data structures. By observing how changes in client actions correlate with specific alterations in the packet data, developers can gradually map the relationship between in-game events and the underlying network protocol. Reverse-engineering network protocols and server logic without the aid of packet dumps is a far more laborious and time-consuming endeavor. It requires a deep understanding of software architecture and network programming principles, as well as the ability to meticulously analyze and interpret disassembled code. While this is theoretically possible — by breaking the game down into its fundamental components and analyzing how it handles network communication — it represents a substantial investment of time and effort.
Client Disassembly as a Complementary Approach: In the absence of comprehensive packet dumps, or to gain a deeper understanding of how the game client interprets and processes network data, disassembling the game client's code becomes a crucial alternative or complementary approach. Game clients typically employ specific routines to handle incoming and outgoing network packets. Analyzing these packet event handlers can reveal the underlying data structures and interpretation logic.
As illustrated by the example below:
int eventId = Stream.Read<int>();
short clientId = Stream.Read<short>();
Vec3 clientPosition = Stream.Read<Vec3>();By reversing the functions responsible for reading this data from the network stream (often template functions that compile into distinct functions for each data type), a developer can deduce the structure of the incoming packet. In this case, it comprises an integer (eventId), a short integer (clientId), and a three-float vector (clientPosition). Armed with this knowledge, even without a direct packet capture, a reverse engineer can begin to:
- Interpret Server Data: Analyze the data received from the server based on the identified structure, attempting to correlate the numerical values with in-game information.
- Experiment with Client Data: Send crafted packets from a modified client to the private server, observing how the server interprets that data and how it affects the game world.
Addressing the Challenge of Encryption: Many modern multiplayer games employ encryption to safeguard game data and prevent cheating. Overcoming this requires a dedicated effort:
- Identifying Encryption Algorithms: Analyzing the client's code to pinpoint the encryption algorithms and libraries in use.
- Reverse-Engineering Key Management: Attempting to locate or derive the encryption keys used for communication.
- Implementing Cryptographic Functions: Replicating the encryption and decryption routines within the private server to ensure proper communication with the game client.
In the face of encryption, the strategy of meticulously observing successful — albeit encrypted — communication patterns becomes paramount. By analyzing the structure and flow of encrypted exchanges for known in-game actions, developers can deduce the expected encrypted format that their private server must adhere to.
Observation and Emulation: The core of private server recreation lies in the ability to accurately emulate the behavior of the original game servers. This requires:
- Detailed Protocol Mapping: Using network analysis tools to meticulously document the sequence of requests and responses for various in-game functionalities.
- Server-Side Logic Implementation: Writing server code that can receive client requests, process them according to the observed behavior of the original server, and generate appropriate responses.
This process demands a blend of meticulous data cataloging (a "librarian" mentality) and insightful deduction (a "sleuth" mentality) to unravel the often-undocumented intricacies of the server-client interaction.
Navigating the Complexities of Regional Variations: Game servers can vary significantly across geographical regions due to legal requirements, localization needs, business agreements, or even separate development efforts. These regional differences can manifest as:
- Protocol Variations: Subtle or significant differences in the communication protocols used.
- Data Format Discrepancies: Variations in how game data is structured and encoded.
- Region-Specific Features: Unique game mechanics or content handled differently on regional servers.
- Compatibility Issues: A private server designed for one region might not be compatible with game clients from another.
Simple Guidance for Aspiring Reverse Engineers: For anyone interested in delving into game server preservation and reverse engineering, several foundational steps are recommended:
- Develop Programming Proficiency: A strong understanding of a general-purpose programming language is essential for analyzing code, manipulating data, and building server emulators. Languages like C/C++ are often preferred for systems-level programming and reverse engineering thanks to their low-level capabilities, but other imperative, non-scripting languages can also be valuable.
- Understand Client-Server Architecture: Gaining a solid grasp of how client-server systems are designed and how they communicate is fundamental. Building a simple client-server application (as suggested by another user — perhaps a simplified chat system or a basic game with networked interactions) can provide invaluable practical experience.
- Explore Network Fundamentals: Familiarity with networking concepts, protocols (like TCP/IP and UDP), and network analysis tools (like Wireshark) is crucial for capturing and examining game traffic.
- Embrace Reverse-Engineering Principles: Learning the methodologies and tools used in reverse engineering is key. This includes techniques for disassembling and decompiling code, analyzing program flow, and identifying data structures.
- Start with Simple Targets: Begin by analyzing simpler applications or network protocols to build foundational skills before tackling complex game systems. Reversing a server or client application for which you have the source code (as also suggested) is an excellent way to learn the process and verify your understanding.
- Engage with the Community: Connecting with other reverse engineers and preservationists can provide valuable insights, shared knowledge, and collaborative opportunities.
- Practice and Persistence: Reverse engineering is a skill that develops with practice. Be prepared for challenges, frustration, and the need for persistent effort in unraveling complex systems.
- Search Extensively: The internet is a vast resource for documentation, tutorials, and discussions related to programming, networking, and reverse engineering. Effective searching and information gathering are crucial skills.
- Follow Your Interests: The most effective learning often happens when you work on projects that genuinely interest you. Choose games or systems you are passionate about to maintain motivation and drive your exploration.
