Larry Hyrb, Xbox Live's Major Nelson, announced on his blog that Xbox Live support for the original Xbox would be discontinued on April 15, 2010, including online play through backwards compatibility on the Xbox 360 (Fusion) and all downloadable content for original Xbox games.[1]

Xbox Live emulation is possible. Revived private server projects, in this case, is a free replacement for Microsoft's servers for the original Xbox console, allowing online functionality to be restored for the first time since 2010 which is allowing you to play online with friends and strangers.

Xbox 360

[edit | edit source]

The Xbox Live Marketplace (marketplace.xbox.com) retired on July 29, 2024.[1] Matchmaking, TrueSkill, social features and other system features dependent on Xbox Live is still working.

Xenia WebServices (compatibility list) (See ongoing development for "Xenia Canary fork Netplay branch", Xenia-WebServices and its subprojects on xenia discord channel)
Xenia will never be able to connect to the real Xbox Live network.[2] But simulated Live-like network is possible and available thanks to Xenia WebServices. The Xenia WebServices project, currently under development, simulates Xbox Live functionality for P2P online multiplayer games. You need to use "Xenia Canary fork Netplay branch" to connect. This fork also could be used to communicate with private servers for games that require a dedicated server for multiplayer features. In this regard, games that require a custom server will not work unless a fan-made, private server is created. This is outside the scope of this fork or Xenia WebServices and will have to be developed by the community. Thanks to these projects, more than 400 titles were marked as multiplayer compatible in 2024 (and more than 500 in 2025). Netplay branch also supports System Link feature of the Xbox 360.
  • To connect to Xenia WebServices, simply change the "api_adress=" value in the "xenia-canary-netplay.config.toml", use the xenia-canary-netplay official guide, you can also visit the address to see active online users and lobbies/sessions. Netplay branch, with the help of latest improvements and support of online XUIDs for simulated xbox live profiles[3], introduced a friend and invite system in its interface[4][5], community sessions[6] and more; these implementations only replicates the original functionality, so it is separate from the Xbox dash interface and the Xbox Live service but it allows you to invite/join friends or recent players for online sessions in supported titles. • Get Title Managed Storage (TMS) content from Xbox Live: GitHub Repository (into your "xstorage/user/createdXUID/title/" directory).
  • No support for TrueSkill ranking system at the moment but Heungsub Lee's TrueSkill system might be implemented as a subproject for stats in the not so distant future.[8] Microsoft published the algorithm[9] and have discontinued its use in the Xbox One, it is using a new system for the Xbox One. So it's unlikely the Fission support this feature either.

Game Room

[edit | edit source]
Main article: Preservation projects#Private platform servers

Game Room was a free-to-play social gaming service for the Xbox 360, Microsoft Windows PCs, and Windows Phone 7. The game was launched on March 24, 2010 and was developed by Krome Studios. In March of 2015, Game Room was removed from digital storefronts with servers for the game being shut down on October 31, 2017.

  • Works fine on Xenia Canary Netplay, outside of the features that needs to connect to private server which is down and there is no revive project at the moment. The service requires you to have DLCs installed in order to play it, just make sure that license-mask is set to 1 in the "xenia-canary-netplay.config.toml".
