For software that emulates the PlayStation 3, see PlayStation 3 emulators.

The PS3 was a powerful console for its generation, and it had a strong homebrew scene spurred on by anger around the removal of OtherOS and the existence of pure software hacks unlike the Xbox 360. Despite its arcane architecture, it received some solid emulators including a great port of RetroArch. A modded system can also take advantage of Sony's built-in software emulation for the PS1, PS2, and PSP, although compatibility may vary.

Multiple guides exist for hacking the PS3, but see here for an overview of the various methods available. All systems can run some form of homebrew via softmodding (and should be sufficient for most purposes), but newer systems cannot install actual CFW without a hardware flasher.

Besides swapping images inside PSClassics for either PS1, PS2 or PSP to get your games to run, or using a CFW with COBRA support (with varying degrees of success because of compatibilty hiccups), there are also homebrew emulators for PlayStation consoles.
