The Xbox's hardware is similar to a mid-range gaming PC of around the time that it was released, which along with its familiar software APIs and large modding/homebrew scene made it an attractive target for developing emulators. The Xbox can emulate most systems up to the 5th generation of consoles with some degree of success, and it is sometimes even capable of using the original CDs for disc-based systems. However, the system's hardware is now obsolete, and most of the emulators are outdated versions built around hacks and workarounds. Given that working Xbox hardware will only become increasingly scarce, users are generally better served by a more modern emulation system. Also note that many of these emulators were compiled against illegally-obtained copies of the XDK which then becomes statically linked with the binaries, making them questionable from a legal standpoint (hence the need for plausible deniability with the xbins IRC).

Much of the information available online about original Xbox modding is outdated. All consoles can be softmodded. The most up-to-date package to accomplish this is Rocky5's Softmod Package. With the latest exploit you only need a memory card and not any vulnerable game discs. Also make sure to remove the clock capacitor, as the most vulnerable systems are running on borrowed time without that fix.
