Carbon Engine is an acronym for a collective of unnamed official emulators used in re-releases of retro games made by Limited Run Games.
List of systems emulated
- NES (e.g.: A Boy and His Blob: Retro Collection, Felix the Cat)
- Super Nintendo (e.g.: Jurassic Park: Classic Games Collection, River City Girls Zero)
- Game Boy (e.g.: Bill & Ted's Excellent Retro Collection, Jurassic Park: Classic Games Collection)
- Game Boy Color (e.g.: Trip World DX, Shantae)
- Game Boy Advance (e.g.: Ninja Five-0)
- Sega Genesis (e.g.: Jurassic Park: Classic Games Collection, Rocket Knight Adventures: Re-Sparked)
- Sega CD (e.g.: Earnest Evans Collection)
- PlayStation (e.g.: Gex Trilogy, Tomba!)
- Atari Jaguar (e.g.: Bubsy in: The Purrfect Collection)
- Multiple Arcade hardware (e.g.: Marvel Maximum Collection)
In addition, Carbon Engine supports emulation of Master System and Game Gear games, however, currently, no compilations currently use it.
Emulation accuracy
In many cases, ROMs are altered to remove references to unrelated elements from their original releases, such as Nintendo and Sega copyrights. The ROMs are also altered to feature button mapping for the target console as well, such as + and - replacing Start and Select on Nintendo Switch versions of compilations.
For GBC games, it is confirmed that Carbon Engine supports the "GBA enhanced" feature in certain games, such as Shantae.
Certain Nintendo Switch iterations of games that use the Carbon Engine were being confirmed with issues when playing on a Nintendo Switch 2. These includes A Boy and His Blob: Retro Collection, Felix the Cat and Jurassic Park Classic Games Collection.[1]
