Carbon Engine is an acronym for a collective of unnamed official emulators used in re-releases of retro games made by Limited Run Games.

List of systems emulated[edit]

  • NES (e.g.: A Boy and His Blob: Retro Collection, Felix the Cat)
  • Super Nintendo (e.g.: Jurassic Park: Classic Games Collection, River City Girls Zero)
  • Game Boy (e.g.: Bill & Ted's Excellent Retro Collection, Jurassic Park: Classic Games Collection)
  • Game Boy Color (e.g.: Trip World DX, Shantae)
  • Game Boy Advance (e.g.: Ninja Five-0)
  • Sega Genesis (e.g.: Jurassic Park: Classic Games Collection, Rocket Knight Adventures: Re-Sparked)
  • PlayStation (e.g.: Gex Trilogy, Tomba!)

In addition, Carbon Engine supports emulation of Master System, Game Gear and Sega CD games, however, currently, no compilations are confirmed to use them.

Emulation accuracy[edit]

In many cases, ROMs are altered to remove references to unrelated elements from their original releases, such as Nintendo and Sega copyrights. The ROMs are also altered to feature button mapping for the target console as well, such as + and - replacing Start and Select on Nintendo Switch versions of compilations.

For GBC games, it is confirmed that Carbon Engine supports the "GBA enhanced" feature in certain games, such as Shantae.
