SCUMM (Script Utility for Maniac Mansion) is an engine made by Ron Gilbert in 1987 and utilised in LucasArt's adventure games between 1987 and 1997

Running SCUMM games on modern (and older) systems

[edit | edit source]

DREAMM

[edit | edit source]
  • Emulates original DOS, FM Towns and Windows versions of games
  • Runs on Windows, Mac and Linux on x64 and ARM64 CPUs
  • Streamlined installation from disk images
  • Reconstructs EXE files missing from GOG/Steam releases
  • Configure games from GUI
  • Solves copy protection prompts for user

ScummVM

[edit | edit source]
  • Reverse engineered interpreter, runs SCUMM games from any system
  • Ported to many different architectures
  • Fixes original bugs in games
  • Many upscaling filters
  • Copy protection is enforced in EGA versions of Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade and Monkey Island 1
  • Often bundled with Steam/GOG releases, note that builds included with those releases are severely outdated and don't represent the fidelity of current ScummVM

Dosbox and forks

[edit | edit source]
  • Generic DOS emulator
  • Features and supported platforms vary between forks
  • Up to user themselves to install and configure games
  • Requires original EXE files to be present
  • Users wanting to play Curse of Monkey Island need to install a Win9x operating system as well
  • Games have copy protection if the original has it, up to user to crack if desired

Platform specific notes

[edit | edit source]

Classic Mac

[edit | edit source]

Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade up to Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis were ported by Eric Johnston and targeted the 68K architecture. Day of the Tentacle to The Dig were ported by Aaron Giles and used fat binaries (68K and PowerPC code in same binary). Aaron Giles also did a PowerPC native port of Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis
Monkey Island 1 and onwards implemented EPX, an algorithm which smoothed the 320x200 when displayed at the Mac's 640x480 resolution (letterboxed)
Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade has its own inventory and verbs interface, used only in the Mac version. Last Crusade and Loom displayed game dialogue in high resolution
Games up to Sam & Max: Hit the Road played music in a software synthesizer. Loading and saving games is reimplemented using Mac's native file dialog menus
These versions are all playable with their original GUI and music in ScummVM 2026.1.0

FM Towns

[edit | edit source]

Zak McKracken to Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis were ported to this Japanese x86-based computer. An unique feature to the FM Towns is the dual layered graphics mode, used on these game to draw high resolution Japanese glyphs over the original 320x200 graphics. The high resolution layer is used for the inventory and verb interface, even when running the game in English, because of this the inventory icons of later games are all lower color depth. These games also utilise smooth horizontal scrolling. The FM Towns version is the only 256 color version of Zak McKracken, and the only unabridged 256 color version of Loom. Red book audio is used for music in all games except for Monkey Island 2 and Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis, which use Adlib music remapped to the FM Towns YM2612 sound chip.
As with the Mac ports, the games are letterboxed without aspect ratio correction. Zak McKracken uses the extra space to display additional inventory items.

Windows ports

[edit | edit source]

Aaron Giles was contracted in the early 2000s to do Windows ports of the first eleven games (CMI already being a Windows game). His ports include the same EPX upscaling found in the prior Mac ports. Unlike the Mac and FM Towns ports there's aspect ratio correction.
Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis to The Dig were released on reissued physical versions of the games, and Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, Fate of Atlantis, Loom and The Dig were released on Steam. Maniac Mansion, Zak McKracken, Monkey Island 1&2 remain unreleased

Ultimate Talkie Editions

[edit | edit source]

Unofficial versions that backports the special editions of Monkey Island 1&2 to run on ScummVM and DOS (using an interpreter from the talkie version of Fate of Atlantis) as well as fixing bugs. Notably this allows the first game to be played with voices and classic graphics
