Sega 3D Classics was a line of re-release games made by Sega for the Nintendo 3DS family of systems. It was mainly exclusive as a digital-only for Nintendo eShop, but all games were re-released in Japan through physical media, alongside some games exclusive to them. The emulation was handled by M2, who previously worked with Sega on many retro game compilations after the demise of Dreamcast. M2 gave the codenames Giga Drive (public) and m2engage (internal) for these games. In terms of accuracy, it should be more or less compared to their Wii Virtual Console iterations of these games.

This should not be confused with the Nintendo iteration of 3D Classics, as it focused on the reconstruction of NES and Arcade games rather than emulation.

Game Replacement[edit]

Replacing ROMs on Sega 3D Classics is not an easy task, as it requires decrypting the game in CIA format, plus decompression and compression of ROMs. This method is mainly viable for Old 3DS/XL/2DS users who do not want to stick with slow frame rates of unofficial emulators or with DS/DSi versions of certain emulators.

Arcade

Very little documentation on how to replace the ROMs for compatible games is provided through the Internet. While the ROMs themselves are stored in one big file, just like MAME, the file itself follows the .ccf format from Wii Virtual Console games.

Consoles

For New 3DS/XL/2DS XL users, in most circumstances, using Genesis Plus GX from RetroArch over the 3D Classics in terms of Sega consoles is recommended.
