Released by Mattel on October 23, 2006, the HyperScan quickly gained a reputation as one of the worst game consoles ever made. It was panned by critics and players for its long loading times (stemming from the choice of CD-ROMs as a storage media), outdated and unreliable hardware, content locked behind trading cards and the resulting neverending cost of operation (the cards, costing $10 ($16 in 2026) per-pack for a random selection of cards, were required for the games to work).
