The vast majority of Visual Novels (the Japanese equivalent of graphic adventure games) are made for various optical-based systems such as: Windows 3.x, Windows 9x, FM Towns operating systems or Sega CD, CD-i consoles. Emulation remains the most practical way to experience these games, offering a more convenient alternative to setting up a virtual machine or using compatibility layers like Wine.

The Visual Novel Problem
Visual Novel preservation has been severely limited to mostly just making backups without an easy way of playing them, there are two main causes of this problem:

* A Lack of interest from both game publishers and those capable of developing an engine recreation.

* The understandable but frustrating rules and policies of projects like ScummVM, anything that has NSFW content will be left behind by these projects.

Restricting access to these who can play them and significantly reducing the chance they will get re-release, let alone get a translation. While many VN engines need recreations, this is unlikely to happen do to the current interest level and the content that a large majority of Visual Novels have.

* Are there any other recreation projects that need to be added?
