Windows NT 6.x is a family of Windows NT, starting with Vista and ending with 8.1.

Windows Vista hit the scene in 2007. A hardware transition occurred shortly after this, with Intel's Penryn processors introducing the first subset of the SSE4 instruction set (SSE4.1), as the complete SSE4 instruction set was released in two parts. Vista introduced User Account Control (UAC), WDDM 1.0, DXGI and DirectX 10, which brought Shader Model 4.0 (and later 4.1). Derived from Windows Vista, Windows Server 2008 also released which removed support for computers without ACPI and the last version of Windows Server that supported 32-bit processors (IA-32). Internet became mainstream, social media platforms like YouTube, Facebook, Twitter, and 4chan began to settle into their own distinct corners, starting to overshadow the instant messaging services that had been huge in the previous generation. During this period, the seventh generation of gaming saw a notable PC port crisis, as many video games, primarily developed for home consoles, were poorly optimized for PC. Vista doubled down on 64-bit support and multithreading, aligning with the rise of multi-core processors and the need for more memory and power. Despite the port crisis and other challenges, this era saw the release of some great hardware; landmark cards like the NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT (2007) and the AMD Radeon HD 4870 (2008) and CPUs like Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 (2007), Intel Core 2 Duo E8400 (2008) became consumer favorites. Regardless, despite not reaching the sheer volume of the previous generation, some iconic PC games were still released during this time. While its high hardware demands and compatibility hiccups drew flak, it is paved the way for another major release after Windows XP;

Windows 7 released in 2009 with DirectX 11, WDDM 1.1, DXGI 1.1 and Shader Model 5.0. Intel's Sandy Bridge processors, which brought the Advanced Vector Extensions (AVX) instruction set, were introduced during this period. Windows Server 2008 R2 also released during this period, it is the final version of Windows Server that supports IA-64 and processors without PAE, SSE2 and NX (although a 2018 update dropped support for non-SSE2 processors). This era saw a major PC gaming renaissance, largely fueled by the stability of Windows 7 and the widespread adoption of powerful affordable hardware since the previous generation finally came to fruition. This era was continuation of the golden age for PC hardware, with both GPUs and CPUs keeps accessible for consumers, since multiple generations at this point. On the CPU front, AMD's Athlon II and Phenom II series cemented their reputation as the kings of budget-friendly multi-core performance, while Intel's Sandy Bridge architecture (notably, the Core i5-2500K) set a great single-thread performance standard for gaming and overclocking, though this generation would mark a slowdown in the pace of Intel's year-over-year performance gains in the coming years. On the graphics side, AMD's Radeon HD 5000 series and then Nvidia's Kepler architecture (GTX 600-series) GPUs delivered a powerful push that cemented personal computers as a mainstream gaming option, a viable alternative to home consoles. The rise of digital distribution platforms like Steam also fueled the market. This period also solidified the PC's reputation as a high-fidelity gaming platform and popularized the "PC Master Race" meme, attracting the new generation of players. Meanwhile, as streaming services slowly began to replace DVDs, new physical formats like Blu-ray and HD-DVD failed to succeed the DVD. The growing popularity of streaming and digital distribution began the slow end of physical media, contributing to the decline of iconic markets like Blockbuster and GameStop. This shift in media consumption was even parodied later in a South Park episode ("A Night on FaceTime").

Windows 8 and Windows Server 2012 with DirectX 11.1, WDDM 1.2, and DXGI 1.2 released in 2012. The initial launch of Windows 8 was widely criticized for its forced touch-centric design, which replaced the familiar Start menu with a full-screen Start screen. This created a confusing and frustrating experience for users on traditional desktop PCs with a keyboard and mouse, leading to low adoption rates. Windows 8.1 and Windows Server 2012 R2 released a year later with DirectX 11.2, WDDM 1.3 and DXGI 1.3. This update also tried to ease the frustration by bringing back the Start button to the taskbar and allowing users to boot directly to the desktop, but clicking the button still led to the full-screen Start screen, not a traditional menu. Despite these issues, this period solidified the PC gaming boom initiated by Windows 7. Even as the pace of Moore's Law began to slow and CPU performance gains became less dramatic, Intel's Ivy Bridge and Haswell CPUs, combined with AMD's Radeon HD 7000 series, and then Nvidia's Maxwell architecture (GTX 900-series) with the GTX 750 Ti delivered the market demand, making gaming on personal computer even more popular. Intel's Haswell microarchitecture, also came with AVX2 instructions, expanded the new vector processing capabilities. As the eighth-generation home consoles were built on PC-like hardware; which made cross-platform development significantly easier, resulting in better-optimized PC ports and the end of the "port crisis." Just like previous generation situation; Xbox One is running modified Windows 8 and include DirectX 11.X which is a superset of DirectX 11.2. A standout style within Y2K trend was Frutiger Aero; glassy, translucent windows with a nature-inspired glow, which brought nature-inspired elements, soft transparencies, and a clean, airy feel to software interfaces and various operating systems including Windows Vista

On top of Intel’s proposed x86-S architecture, Intel completely dropped the misguided MPX instructions, and dropped TSX after apparently deciding they couldn’t fix the broken implementations, similarly to Intel's SGX situation with UHD-HD.

Sometimes, all that's needed to run an older game is a DLL wrapper for its graphics API. While not as common as the Glide wrapper for Windows 9x games, these wrappers can be useful for Windows Vista games that were designed for older versions of OpenGL or D3D. Many games are considered enough of a cult classic that the source code is made publicly available for study and use as a base for ports to newer platforms. For some titles, this is done by the developer themselves to show other developers the viability of such a project. However, for most games this'll usually be done by force through reverse engineering.

Some of this digital storefronts modifies game files for compatibility reasons with modern operating systems, this results in the elimination of the original game installers though, providing only custom setup executables or no authentic original setup process at all.[1]

Unlike emulating earlier systems like DOS, Windows 3.x, or Windows 9x, emulating Windows Vista, Windows 7 or 8 remains a significant challenge, even with actively developed advanced emulators. While these emulators excel at handling older systems, performance remains a major hurdle for Windows NT 6.x. Therefore, emulation isn't a practical choice, even for those seeking the most accurate experience.
