Should we keep the news (on main page) to 10 unique emulators? If it's multiple updates to the same emulator we could move them from main page news to month section directly. -Jpx (talk) 06:13, 19 February 2020 (UTC)

Yes they should be unique to just the latest one, we don't want to see a list dominated by one or two emulators because they do quick point releases, betas/svn/rev/blah whatevers and push everything else relevant off the list.

Clearly not enough years

We've noticed that the current cutaway date for logging of emulator releases is sitting at the year 1995, which is obviously not nearly far back and not enough, as first feasible gaming emulators started with PasoFami's FM Towns vanilla version, which dates back to May 1 of 1993. There was "Family Computer Emulator" ver. 0.35 before that, which was made by one of Nintendo's programmers (Haruhisa Edogawa) and was coded for FM Towns as well, which was released on December 12 of 1990, three years before PasoFami, but "FCE 0.35" was barely any usable, it was not realistically feasible as emulation platform for Famicom gaming, so PasoFami FMT is the actual proper very first emulator in history which was able to achieve actual honest playable and usable state for everyday usage case. This was followed by "MegaDrive" (very first known Sega Genesis/MegaDrive emulator in history, which was released in early 1994) and "VSMC" (the very first known Super Famicom/SNES emulator in history, released in early 1994 as well).

Adding more slots

News relevance

The news section clearly needs a stronger curation mechanism. Many of the listed apps are irrelevant, and even those that are relevant often receive updates without any genuinely newsworthy changes. Who really cares that SimpleLauncher v5.3.3 added ZIP path traversal unit tests, or that AppleWin v1.31.0.4 (beta) renamed "Apple II+" to "Apple II Plus"? In my view, launchers and frontends should be excluded by default - this is emulation wiki, not launcher wiki. For emulators, the threshold for what counts as newsworthy should also be raised. Only core emulation improvements deserve inclusion. Minor UI tweaks, translations, unit tests, or new CI pipelines may be nice, but they don’t qualify as meaningful news.

Frontends are part of emulation though. A lot of people use stuff like RetroArch or LaunchBox as their main way to run emulators. Cutting them out doesn't make sense. Sure, not every update is worth posting, but the "only core changes matter" is kinda subjective. - - R-K (talk) 16:25, 26 April 2026 (UTC)

Does eden blog count as news?

The News section on the front page is primarily used to track version numbers, version updates and project releases. It counts as news if it's announcing a new release or version update. If the post is just a general blog or progress update, it's usually better suited for the project's specific wiki page. The same goes for any project. - - R-K (talk) 11:23, 1 May 2026 (UTC)

Update News Aggregators

We have a number of news aggregators listed, some key ones missing, and some with inaccurate descriptions.

For example: Mr. Sujano is a youtuber who puts out emulation news every single day. Often times, other news sites - including reddit Emulation - utilize his videos to source their news. There are emulator developers that message Sujano with updates, and he even has a section of his discord for it. (https://www.youtube.com/mrsujano)

Another example: "r/emulation (Reddit) – the primary source for breaking news, often reporting major releases, GitHub commits, and key compatibility breakthroughs first." - this is factually incorrect. Reddit emulation gets updated every few days and often lags behind other sources. Today is April 30, and the last time it was updated was April 27.

Another example: "r/emulationonandroid" is not even listed and has a lot of new and up to date information that is often cross-posted to reddit emulation (that shows up days later after admin approval). (https://www.reddit.com/r/EmulationOnAndroid/?f=flair_name:%22News/Release%22)

Another example: There are discord groups dedicated to emulation news, and not one is listed - even reddit Emulation has one that is very active and more active than their actual reddit page. We don't have a singly discord group listed. The only drawback is that discord requires a login/account. I think we should entertain listing discord groups as it's similar to a forum, especially since there are specific "announcement" pages within discord groups that are not live chats. Thoughts?

Thanks for the suggestions! I've added Mr. Sujano's youtube channel and r/EmulationOnAndroid to the list and corrected the description. If you have a specific list of those discord servers you mentioned, please share them, it would be great to get those added too!

Otherwise, @SonofUgly, following what was discussed here, it might make sense to have the 10 newest entries on a protected /list page to prevent main page vandalism, while leaving the news articles unprotected, so anyone can still contribute. IMO, it might be better to remove the protection and leave things as they are, since vandalism can always be reverted, and I agree with SonofUgly that it does not happen that often. just a thought - - R-K (talk) 13:33, 1 May 2026 (UTC)
