First off, '''you must have a PS3 on FirmWare system firmware 3.55, or lower, to mod it.''' If you are on a lower FWfirmware, then simply [http://www.mediafire.com/?sm8kd6liqzj3jo5 upgrade to 3.55]. However, if you're on a higher FWfirmware, then you must downgrade using a hardware ''Flasherhardware flasher''. Below is table for what models are downgradable and what flashers can be used on those models:

You can connect to PSN while on CFW, but there is a high risk that your PSN ID and Console ID will be banned. There is a way to unban a console. It requires someone else's Console ID and it can be banned too.
As for emulators, ==Emulation==[[RetroArch]] has a PS3 portwith lots of working cores that should cover most of the usual suspects. You can emulate PS2 games on any model of the PS3 using ''ps2_netemu'' (Sony's own software-based PS2 emulator, also known as the "PS2 Classics Emulator"), which was developed for playing the PS2 games sold on PSN. It was never meant to be used as a general-purpose emulator, which means you really shouldn't be expecting perfect compatibility with games it hasn't been specifically optimized for, but many titles are playable. Refer to the PSHomebrew's [http://www.pshomebrew.net/wiki/PS2_Classics_Emulator_Compatibility_List PS2 Classics compatibility list] for per-game info. Note that if you own an old backwards-compatible PS3 unit, so try and it outfor whatever reason hasn't broken yet, you'll rather want to be using ''ps2_emu'' - the emulator that's launched when you put a PS2 game disc into the console. Unlike ps2_netemu, this one utilizes the extra PS2 hardware integrated in your console and has much better compatibility. ps2_emu is only usable on ''COBRA'' firmwares, meaning custom firmwares that integrate the functionality that was previously only available for those who bought the DRM'd Cobra dongle. Refer to Wikipedia's [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_PlayStation_3_backward_compatible_PlayStation_2_and_PlayStation_games PS3 backward compatibility list] for per-game info.
You can [http://www.ps3hax.net/2013/03/released-beta-ps2-classics-manager-v1-00-20130324-cex-340-4xx/ emulate PS2 PSP games also work on PS3], any model through an emulator created for playing "PS3Minis" from PSN, however the emulator was never fully completed but compatibility is very limited (it's Sony's own, they gave up on a full PS2 emulator for PS3 and instead now repacking PS2 ISOs with a modified version less than that of the emu for $10 on PSNPPSSPP) so not all games work. Refer to PSHomebrew's [http://www.pshomebrew.net/wiki/PS2_Classics_Emulator_Compatibility_List Check the this PSP_On_PS3_Compatibility_List PSP on PS3 compatibility list ] for games that do work]per-game info.
PSP games also work ==Other useful info==You can connect to PSN while on PS3 through the same method as aboveCFW, [http://wwwbut there is a high risk that your PSN ID and Console ID will be banned.pshomebrewThere is a way to unban a console.net/wiki/PSP_On_PS3_Compatibility_List though not many games work] (less than that of PPSSPP)It requires someone else's Console ID and it can be banned too.
