This is the history of Microsoft windows operating systems<br>
Microsoft first Operating system was Xenix in 1980 an commercial Unix Operating system. Microsoft in 1982 released the much more famous MS-DOS. The first versions of windows (Windows 1.0-3.0) were graphical shells for MS-DOS each version adding new features such as icons and media playback. In 1995 Microsoft started releasing Operating systems in the <abbr title="Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows ME">"Windows 9x" family</abbr>. The first version of Windows NT was Windows NT 3.1 released in 1993, but only targeted businesses, Windows NT 3.5-4.0 likewise only targeted businesses. they are not listed as the first release of windows NT for that reason. IBM and Microsoft collaborated to develop OS/2 in the late 1980s; it was first released in 1987. The deal to develop the Operating system together ended with Microsoft leaving development to IBM with Microsoft and IBM not agreeing on how to position OS/2 with Microsoft's Windows 3.0.
