DroidArcadia is an Android port of the WinArcadia / AmiArcadia emulators. It allows users to play games from the Arcadia 2001 line of early home consoles and other machines that used similar hardware. The emulator is a subset of the full WinArcadia/AmiArcadia feature set, optimized for mobile devices running Android 8.0 or higher with touchscreen controls and gamepad support. It also supports RetroAchievements.

System Requirements

DroidArcadia requires:

  • Android 8.0 or higher
  • 480×960 resolution or higher (176 dpi minimum)
  • Storage permissions (for saving screenshots)

The emulator has been tested on various devices including Redmi 6A, ZTE Optus P500 and P501 phones with Android 8.1, 9, and 11 at resolutions of 480×960 (176 dpi) and 720×1440 (320 dpi), as well as on BlueStacks 5 emulator.

DroidArcadia supports a subset of the features found in the desktop versions of the Arcadia emulator family:

Controls

The emulator features on-screen touch controls as well as support for physical gamepads, joysticks, and keyboards. Real gamepads are mapped with intuitive button layouts, with support for up to four fire buttons, autofire toggle, and paddle directions via D-pad. An example mapping for 8BitDo Zero 2 gamepad is documented in the official readme.

Display Options

Multiple stretching modes are available including 4:3 aspect ratio correction for NTSC mode. The emulator includes visual enhancement options such as "Darken backgrounds" for Interton and Elektor systems, "Enhance skies" effects, and "Flag line emulation" for Arcadia.

Emulation Modes

DroidArcadia offers both line-based and pixel-based emulation modes for improved accuracy. The emulator includes sprite demultiplexing support and artefacting options for authentic visual reproduction.

Save States

Quick save and quick load state functionality is available through the options menu using COS file format. Note that DroidArcadia COS files are not cross-compatible with AmiArcadia or WinArcadia save states.

  • TVC files for Elektor

Controls

The RESET button functions differently depending on the system:

  • For Arcadia and Interton systems, the on-screen RESET button performs the same action as the "Reset" command in the options menu
  • For Elektor, the on-screen RESET button is an ordinary console button, while the "Reset" command in the options menu performs a full machine reset

  • Zaccaria coin operated systems including Astro Wars, Galaxia, Laser Battle, and Lazarian 1979 to 1981

Development

DroidArcadia is written in C and Java 17 using Android Studio 2024.3.1 (Meerkat). The emulator receives regular updates with improvements to accuracy, game-specific enhancements, and bug fixes. Recent updates have included improvements to sprite rendering, timing adjustments for specific games, and enhanced overlay support.
