Talk:The Visual Novel Problem
To do:
- Finish the "Active Projects" section
- Make sure the page doesn't sound like we're attacking, shunning or putting down projects like ScummVM for their rules and policies while not ignoring there effect on preservation
- Get the table of engines done (I'm working on it)
- Make sure the page give a clear understanding of the current state of preservation for Visual Novels made for windows from the 90s to early to mid 2000s
I hope to get some help with improving this page, I have both dysgraphia, ADHD and Autism, so there will likely be issues with the page that I didn't noticed. Also, if there anything you want to add, feel free to add it.
- Well what about PC Emulators? Isn't it the best way for this? -Ahayri
- PC Emulators have the same issue as virtual machines, 86Box for example still requires users to configure hardware and install windows.
- This page speaks for a bigger preservation issue that goes beyond the purpose of that page. These games are currently limited to those with the technical knowhow to set up Wine, a virtual machine, a PC Emulator or those have the original hardware. What VN engines are in dire need of is a ScummVM-type solution but for many engines, ScummVM is out of the question because they were mostly if not only used to make visual novels that have adult content. Visual Novels from the 90s to early to mid 2000s are (currently) either only playable by a select group of people or their caught up in rules and policies on adult content, this is really bad for preservation and often kills any chances of them getting re-release.
For the most part, the only VN's from this era that are fully preserved are the really well known ones that are getting remakes or remasters and VN's released for consoles, console releases almost never have adult content, so their safe.
