Does this need to be a separate page? It only applies to NES/FC emulators. Also, got all the old FBX palettes, along with the 3DS and Wii VC palettes: http://www72.zippyshare.com/v/SuoBlNDT/file.html

Yes, it should get its own page. We can go into more detail on a new page. Right now there's a section showing the raw palette colors. We should also have a section showing screenshots of these palettes in action. --70.30.23.219 23:57, 18 February 2016 (EST)

Added FCEUX, Grayscale, YUV palettes, along with organizing them better if someone wants to reupload: http://www99.zippyshare.com/v/tLI0ibjA/file.html

I need to verify that the Nintendulator NTSC palette is the same as the YUV palette before I can safely say 100% that the natural palette is the YUV palette. Bear with me on this one.

Consumer download[edit]

Currently, there is no .pal download for Consumer. This should be added to the download. It can only be used right now in emulators that support it built in. --NiggaJamesGood (talk) 10:46, 23 May 2016 (EDT)

Other games that are potential candidates of using a NES type palette?[edit]

Should we list some other games that have potential to be added to the list? For example, Super Mario Bros. 35. Does that game use a palette already listed? Is it using NES Classic Edition palette, or a YUV based palette? Since it was made from the ground up, I'm sure they used a base palette.

Also, since we have listed Mega Man 9's palette, can we also list the palettes used in Mega Man Legacy Collection, and/or Mega Man Mobile? Unless Mega Man Legacy Collection is using a similar palette already listed. Though I know for certain that RockMan Complete Works (JPN) used one that's very close to NESticle's palette.

Those values are just the defaults used on puNES and a few older emulators (palette named "NTSC" or similar), and are not representative (nor accurate) of the Famicom color palette (seems this "fact" got propagated onto comment sections of several NES-related sites, eventually reaching its way here); thus, based on the topics below, and the info from the linked blog post, the "debate" (so to speak) is still ongoing: http://nerdlypleasures.blogspot.com/2016/10/video-potpourri-ii.html

"NES Classic" palette seems very dubious[edit]

It does not look like the actual miniconsole, which has e.g. browner and less orange bricks and ground in the Super Mario Bros. aboveground levels. How was this palette obtained?

Meanwhile, NES Classic (FBX) is nearly identical to the "NSO Palette 7" included in the download link, except FBX's RGB values never go over 252 (FC), with "NSO Palette 7" having 254 (FE) and 255 (FF) instead.

With both of these in mind, it seems to me far more likely that FirebrandX's is the correct palette (or possibly "NSO Palette 7" if the reason for the slight discrepancy is an error in FBX's method with regard to extreme RGB values). PikaSamus (talk) 17:14, 21 August 2022 (UTC)

Adding more palette entries and replacing the download link[edit]

There's a download on Archive.org that has all of the same palettes as the Mediafire link and a lot more extra palettes including the palettes by Kitrinx that are used by default in MiSTer's NES core and the new FirebrandX palettes. I also edited the palette comparison picture to include the more palettes. https://archive.org/details/nes-palettes-v-2.4 https://youtu.be/rhT6YYRH1EI?t=1317 https://emulation.gametechwiki.com/index.php/File:NES_Palette_Comparison_-_Castlevania.png

Here's some text I edited for the chart and palette sections:

Palette Nestopia decoder preset NESRGB palette name Description
Magnum (FBX) N/A N/A A palette based on colors displayed on a PVM 20M2U with adjustments made to match colors with a dual feed.[1]
Smooth V2 (FBX) N/A N/A An updated version of the Smooth palette with darker colors taken from the Magnum palette. The brighter palettes are the same as the original Smooth palette. Formerly known as "Smootz".[1]
Kitrinx (USA) N/A N/A A palette programmed mathematically from the NES hardware logic.[2]
Kitrinx (Japanese) N/A N/A Same as the Kitrinx (USA) palette, but the colors are brighter.

The MiSTer github repo strives to collect and constantly update all palettes out there, so recommending it instead: https://github.com/MiSTer-devel/NES_MiSTer/tree/master/Palette
If willing to, here's further detailed reference (along with the Nerdly Pleasures blog post above), straight from Kitrinx and other MiSTer developers: https://misterfpga.org/viewtopic.php?t=1115
And lastly, for those interested, there's now transistor-level emulation (currently very slow of course, but very promising) of both the CPU and various PPUs (which might be key to resolving the palette "debate"); with the breaks/breaknes project (after now-inactive VisualNes and MetalNES) being actively the most developed to date: https://twitter.com/dubesinhower/status/1602027057256534016
