Two PS1 emulators, ePSXe and PCSX-R, rely on various plugins to run or use special enhancements. Both generally use the same plugins, and this info can be used for setting them up. Certain plugins and options however cannot be used in ePSXe and can only work PCSX-R.

Emulator

The two emulators that use plugins differ in some key ways:

PCSX-R

  • Support for PeteOpenGL2Tweak plugin
  • Lilypad input plugin
  • GTE Accuracy option in OpenGL 1.78
  • True widescreen option for 3D games

EPSXE

  • ePSXE cannot use Lilypad plugin
  • Cannot use GTE accuracy
  • No true widescreen, only stretching
  • Cant use PeteOpenGL2Tweak
  • Can use the [PEC] Plugin

BIOS

Don't use simulated BIOS, download and use a real BIOS. Any BIOS file in that package will work.

Video

  • Having problems? Try these settings.
3D: PEOPS OpenGL 1.78 - Comes with PCSX-R. Has an anti-jitter function labeled "GTE accuracy", and allows driver-forced AA. Despite being open source this plugin wasn't updated for years either(except FPSE version) and cant use shaders like Pete OpenGL2 and gpuBladeSoft. There is also optimized, modified and enhanced versions of this plugin in active development which can currently be used only by FPSE.
  • Pete's OpenGL2 2.9 homepage - More accurate and compatible than OpenGL 1.78. It allows you to set a custom rendering resolution for within the fullscreen box, aka window resolution and has support for shaders. Unfortunately this plugin is closed source and wasn't updated for years. A hack was made to add GTE accuracy, and a few other options: PeteOpenGL2Tweak.
  • 2D: Edgbla's gpuBladeSoft 1.42a homepage - Very accurate and has a lot of options for enhancements and support for shaders, but renders everything on CPU so can be very demanding at high resolutions. Fairly buggy past native rendering resolution as well, with texture misalignment issues and whatnot. Like Pete's OpenGL2, it's closed source and hasn't been updated in years. But there is some hope the author will release a new version.

Audio

  • P.E.Op.S 1.10 beta - Recommended for most games and setups (in order to use turbo, the mode needs to be set to 2: Async Simple; it will not work with 3 or 4).
  • Eternal SPU 1.5 - Useful for the few games/PCs that have issues with P.EOp.S.

Input

  • LilyPad latest SVN - The plugin comes with PCSX2 (go into the plugin folder and pull out the file that says lilypad.dll and put it in the emulator your plan on using's plugin folder). Set keyboard input to raw also, otherwise you wont be able to use hotkeys.
Use the following if you're using a PS3 controller:
  • Pokopom XInput Pad Plugin XInput plugin for PS1, PS2, and DC emulators. It's a light-weight plugin with a lot of options, such as the ability to switch the bindings of the cross and circle buttons around for Japanese imports. It doesn't have any button binding options, but since it's meant for mapping an emulated DualShock controller to an actual DualShock controller, you don't really need to rebind anything. You can also edit the analog stick deadzones.

This pack has preconfigured versions of both the regular and SCP versions of LilyPad.

Plugin-less Alternatives

These PS1 emulators do not use plugins, in case you want something that just works and is more accurate.
