Development
Altirra is made by Avery "phaeron" Lee, who has also programmed a popular and open-source video capture and processing software designed for 32-bit and 64-bit Windows called VirtualDub. That tool was first uploaded to the SourceForge website on mid-August 2000 but its development ceased in late 2013, while Altirra's production continued long afterwards. Although, an enhanced spin-off was being built by a different person.
The Altirra software is particularly notable for having a very well equipped debugger tool. You can see this devotion to it from the author by the decent amount of attention paid to it in virtually all of the versions' changelog on the Altirra page at its official website. It's unclear when exactly Altirra's first version was uploaded on the Net publicly, but early 2009 was the likely date as the next version at 1.1 was released on May 12, 2009.
