History
blueMSX was initially released in 2003 and soon became one of the most accurate and user friendly emulators.

Like many other MSX emulators, blueMSX started as a clone of fMSX. The feature that made the first release, in November 2003, unique to the MSX emulator scene at the time, was the addition of monitor simulation. This feature made the video output look like an old TV or a monitor.

Initially, blueMSX's emulation was quite poor and suffered from the same limitations and flaws as its mother fMSX. However, during the first year the development focused on improving and replacing the misbehaving emulation code, as well as redesigning the software architecture. With better architecture, emulation of new devices became easier, and wasn't very long before most audio devices and ROM types were supported.

In August 2004 blueMSX became the first MSX emulator to support skins.

In November 2004, blueMSX was finally 100% free of fMSX code. The November release was also a big milestone since it brought support for the Turbo-R, the last MSX produced. On top of that, it was the first release that included emulation for the ColecoVision and the Spectravideo SV-328.

Since the November 2004 milestone, developer focus has been on improving the user interface and emulation accuracy, as well as extending the emulation to include more exotic devices such as the Konami Keyboard Master, an unreleased speech synthesis ROM.

The emulation core was extended to support any Z80 based computer systems and is now supporting multiple systems, such as SG-1000, Spectravideo]], and ColecoVision.

Later additions to the emulation include support for digitizers, IDE and SCSI hard drives, and emulation of the extensions in the Yamaha CX5-M music computer.

A big effort to make the emulator portable to other platforms started in 2007 and since then the emulator has been ported to multiple other systems. The current architecture of the emulator makes it easy to compile to any system with a c compiler and does not depend on any graphics, audio, or user input libraries.

Feature highlights
The emulation engine in blueMSX is cycle accurate, which means that the timing and synchronization between emulated hardware components appear the same as on a real MSX. The goal is to replicate each individual component as accurate as possible, which means that the emulator require a more high end PC than emulators optimized for speed.

Most hardware released for the MSX system is emulated and the emulator includes a configuration editor to mimic real MSX systems by choosing components such as floppy drives, memory, sound chips and video chips. Several pre-configured machines are available for users that don't want to build their own machines.

Common emulator features are supported, like screen shots, AVI rendering, and a cheat system. The emulator has a theme based GUI with buttons to control the emulation, a virtual keyboard, and controls to change sound and video settings runtime.

blueMSX is capable of emulating major sound chips including programmable sound generator (AY-3-8910 SN76489) sound chips, Konami SCC, Moonsound (OPL4), FM-PAC (YM2413), MSX-AUDIO (Y8950 sound chip) and a couple of different PCM devices. The volume and pan of each sound chip can be configured in a basic mixer.

blueMSX simulates six different monitor types, from sharp modern monitors to old TV sets. The emulator has controls for real time modification of gamma, brightness, contrast, saturation and color shifting, and it supports horizontal and vertical stretch, as well as a slider for adaptable scanlines on all monitor modes to make the ratio of the video output match a real system. It also supports multiple video sources, for example an external 80 column card.

blueMSX includes a graphical debugger with register windows, memory windows, call stack windows, breakpoints, trace and other features. This makes blueMSX a good development platform for the supported systems.
Overview
Mednafen only has a command line interface, so its interface might be hard to use to new users.

The best cores in Mednafen are those that are original - which are the PS1, PCE, PC-FX and Virtual Boy cores. The PCE core is one of the best emulators for that system, with a Fast and Accurate version. The PS1 core is native resolution only, and features high degree of accuracy and compatibility. The Virtual Boy core is one of the best for the system, although it does not attempt to reproduce the 3D.

Other cores improve upon emulators that have been long abandoned and rarely updated. These include the Neo-Geo Pocket, WonderSwan Color and Atari Lynx cores.

Other cores are less useful, as there are better options in stand-alone emulators (NES, Genesis, Master System and SNES). These cores might even be based on out-dated versions. For instance, the SNES core is based on an old outdated version of bSNES. This is before the performance/accuracy/balanced cores - 0.50x territory - with a couple of changes by Ryphecha.

It is unknown at this time whether Mednafen's GBA core is better than VBA-M.

RetroArch uses the PS1, PCE, Neo-Geo Pocket, Virtual Boy, and WonderSwan cores of Mednafen, so it might make sense to use that instead.

Using Mednafen
Mednafen is pretty easy to get up and running. You can use a frontend like medgui. However, a good text editor like Notepad++ is all you need if you need to change settings.
BIOS
Most cores do not require any BIOS except for the PS1, PCE-CD and PC-FX cores. BIOS files need to be placed into a folder called "firmware" in your Mednafen directory. Mednafen is very picky about which BIOS to use. The ones that you might need are:

PS1:

*scph5500.bin Required for Japan-region games.
*scph5501.bin Required for North America/US-region games.
*scph5502.bin Required for Europe-region games.

PCE-CD:

*syscard3.pce
PC-FX:

*pcfx.rom

CUE
For most systems, Mednafen only needs the rom file; but to load PS1 games, Mednafen requires CUE sheets to know where the music data is. Ensure that the CUE sheet is properly set up in order for the game to run. See the Cue sheet (.cue) page for more info.

Loading a game
To load a game in Mednafen, simply drag and drop your rom or CUE file onto mednafen.exe, or if you prefer, you can use the command line. Mednafen requires no special commands, such as the desired system. For example, in Windows, the command would look like C:/Emulators/Mednafen/mednafen.exe C:/Roms/Nintendo/battletoads.nes

Dual Analog Controllers with PS1
To enable analog sticks and rumble on DualShock controllers, open the mednafen-09x.cfg file, search for "psx.input.port1" and change gamepad to DualShock. Do this for port2 if you wish to play multiplayer games with the features of DualShock controllers.

Configuring Controls
Once in-game, to configure your controller at any time, press Alt+Shift+1 and it will guide you through the setup. Press Alt+Shift+2 and so on for each additional controller for multiplayer.

Graphical Enhancements
Sprite Limit
This is a feature on older systems, due to hardware limitations, that makes it only display so many sprites could be on screen at the same time. Most systems got around this limitation by alternating which sprites were on screen each refresh, causing the sprite to flicker. Mednafen's default settings are true to the original system limits, but this can be disabled in the cfg file. Here is the list of options from the cfg file to change from 0 to 1 if you don't wish to have the limit.

*pcfx.rom
*nes.no8lim
*pce.nospritelimit
*pce_fast.nospritelimit
*pcfx.nospritelimit

Cheats
Mednafen supports the usual cheats such as GameShark, Code Breaker, and Action Replay. The cheats menu can be accessed with ALT+C.
Mednafen memory cards
To transfer memory cards, follow this guide. Also, in games with multiple discs with saves that carry over, you have to follow the same procedure.

It's recommended that you download a frontend
#Run MedGui.exe
#You'll get a small window. On your left, you'll see two arrow buttons with a console/handheld icon in between. Choose your desired platform.
#Click the button with the blue lightning icon and look for the folder that contains your game(s). The emulator looks for compressed archives by default, but you can still load uncompressed files by clicking on the drop down menu.
#Pick your game.
#Click the button with a checkered red ball and joystick to start the game.
#You'll then (very likely) get a message an update prompt. Click Yes, and wait.
#Start the game. If it asks you to update again, ignore it and restart the emulator.
#While the game is loaded, press ALT + SHIFT + 1 to map your controller. You'll get several options per button (for example, UP 1, UP 2, UP 3, etc.). Just map the first one to your controller, and the rest to a key you'll never press. You will have to repeat this step for every emulator core.
#Close the emulator.
#Click the arrow button on the right side of the window. It should expand it.
#Click Advanced Mode.
#Click the tab called Media/Network/Utility.

For Hosting:
#In the Netplay-Server section, you have the following options:
#*"Max Clients", as in, the number of people that can connect to your server (not necessarily players; theoretically you can use this as a makeshift stream)
#*"Conn. Timeout" which is the number of seconds you'll allow for your clients to attempt establishing a connection
#*"Port" where you'll choose one an open TCP/UDP one
#*"Password" which you can establish or leave blank
#When you're done fiddling with your settings, click Create standard.conf
#Click Create Server. A cmd window will appear.
#Click My IP to obtain your external IP address, and share it along with your port to your friend(s).
#Launch the game.
#Press T, and type /server localhost.
#Wait for other people to connect.

If you're Connecting:
#In the Netplay-Client section, you have the following options:
#*"Host", which is the server's IP you'll connect to
#*"Port, which is the one used by the server (which you should also have open on your end).
#*"Password", blank if there is none.
#*"Nickname" where you type whatever you want.
#*"Localplayer" is the number of players that will also be playing from one computer.
#*"Small font" which makes the chat font smaller.
#When you're done fiddling with your settings, launch the game.
#Press T, and type /server IP_goes_here.

You can chat in-game by pressing T. Also, remember that you can drop in and out of the game at any time, so you don't need to reset the game if someone accidentally disconnects.
There are way too many settings, commands and features to list, so take a look at the emulator's documentation.

The Xbox One is an eighth-generation console produced by Microsoft in 2013. Early in its life, it was heavily criticised for intrusive DRM, such as always-online and lack of used game sharing. These have since been removed. Notably, this console runs on the x86 architecture, so it is essentially a PC.
It was released by Pioneer Corporation in 1993. In addition to LaserActive games, separately sold add-on modules (called "PACs" by Pioneer) accepts Sega Mega Drive and PC Engine ROM cartridges and CD-ROMs.

Pioneer released the LaserActive model CLD-A100 in Japan on August 20, 1993 at a cost of ¥89,800, and in the United States on September 13, 1993 at a cost of $970. NEC later released a cloned version of the system, the NEC PDE-LD1, which also accepted Pioneer's PAC modules. The LaserActive was a commercial failure.

Emulators
Emulation issues
Currently there are no emulators for LaserActive games.

The LaserActive Project wishes to document all LaserActive media. On their FAQ page, they have this to say about the possibility of creating a LaserActive emulator:

Emulation of the LaserActive, if attempted at all, would be an incredibly difficult task – due to the hybrid nature of the system’s hardware (utilizing Sega/NEC hardware in synchronization with the unique LD player hardware) and the analog-digital composite image (analog video background, digital in-game graphics generated by said Sega/NEC hardware)

Emulation Developer Nemesis has made an effort to dump the games for the system (except for porn games). Copies of the games will be sent to him and then sent back.
MAME (an acronym of Multiple Arcade Machine Emulator) is an emulator for arcade game systems. The aim of MAME is to be a reference to the inner workings of the emulated arcade machines; the ability to actually play the games is considered "a nice side effect".

The emulator supports over seven thousand unique games and ten thousand actual ROM image sets, though not all of the supported games are playable. There are many MAME front-ends available.

MESS is a related, but separate project to create a multi-system emulator for consoles.

Review
MAME is very extensive, with the majority of arcade system boards from the 70's, 80's and early 90's supported. Do not expect support for more recent boards, such as atomiswave. MAME focuses on accuracy and archiving arcade games, which means it does not always focus on usability for the end user. Only the most up to date romdumps will work in the latest MAME.

ROM dumps
Due to the design of MAME it is often confusing how roms work under it and whats needed. A single game may require numerous files inside its zip, samples for missing sounds, CHD (Compressed Hunks of Data), and bios. To help manage all these files it is highly recommended to use a rom management tool such as RomCenter or clrmamepro because without all the required files and file versions the game simply will not work.

A couple of important notes when handling MAME files do not rename the game files or unzip them. MAME requires each file to be named according to its database else it wont know where to look. CHD files need to be in your rom folder in its own directory with the same name of the CHD such as C:/MAME/Roms/gamename/gamename.chd.

PROS ||
*Support for up to 4 simultaneous people playing
*No fiddling with router settings and port forwarding
*Despite being old, many consider it being able to handle Kaillera the best
*Netplay traffic is handled by a central dedicated server that helps keep things synched
*Robust library of games
*Extremely configurable
*Private game chat support and public chat to speak people outside your game room
*Being able to drop out of a game at any time without disrupting (much) your teammate(s).
*Kicking/banning/muting people from your room
*It's a matchmaking service where you can join other people's rooms, too
CONS ||
*It's slightly (significantly still) prone to freezing
*Mapping controllers and binding keys can only be done in-game, which might be confusing to first-timers
*Incorrectly emulates many games, while outright not being able to emulate others
*Random, inconsistent FPS drops due to the server trying to keep everyone synched, sometimes stuttering. It's annoying, but rarely does it make it unplayable
*Everyone needs to have the exact same ROM version or Netplay won't work (if it somehow does, it'll desynch rather quickly)
*Everyone needs to have the exact same save file, or no save file at all. Else, it desynchs
*You need to constantly switch focus back and forth between chat and emulator window in order to chat.
*You will hear no sound while the window is unfocused.
colspan=1 |How to

#Replace the kailleraclient.dll inside the "kaillera" folder in the emulator directory
#Place your game(s) ZIPPED inside the "roms" folder in the emulator directory
#Run the emulator, then press F5 to refresh your ROM list
#Go to file, click Kaillera Netplay...
In order to configure your controllers, you need to press TAB once the game is running. Clear every key for Player 1 using "Esc", and only map the directional buttons, and buttons number 1 through 8, which should cover most standard games.

You may also chat in-game by pressing Home twice.

Also, you have to restart the emulator EVERY TIME you load a new game, or attempt to restart the current one. Else, you'll get a black screen.

Here is a simple guide for the steps one should take to try to resolve your problems.

Steps to take
1. Update to latest version
Emulators can have stable builds that are weeks, months, and sometimes even years old. The "stable" version is often times just a randomly picked dev version. That is why the latest dev versions should be preferred. This could solve emulation issues most of the time. Links to dev builds can be found at the pages for PCSX-R, PCSX2, Dolphin, nullDC, DeSmuME and PPSSPP.

2. Change settings
If you're using a plugin based emulator, graphical glitches and sound issues might be solved by changing the settings.
*PS1 Plugins
*N64 Plugins

3. Review these FAQs:
*Emulator Problems FAQ
*Game Problems FAQ

4. Check for known issues
There are resources available for emulators which lists the common known issues with games, and the solutions.
*PCSX2 Wiki
*Dolphin Wiki
*PPSSPP Compatibility List
*N64 Config List

5. Check the archives
Sometimes, questions may have been asked and answered multiple times in the past. Check the Emulation General archives.
*Foolz archive of /vg/
*Previous threads

6. Read the wiki
The rest of the wiki may have information you need.
http://emulation.gametechwiki.com/index.php/Main_Page

7. Ask Emulation General
If you still can't find a solution, ask Emulation General. Provide relevant details such as:
*System specs, including CPU and GPU
*Operating system
*Emulator and version
*Emulator settings/plugins
*System and game emulated
*The problem itself. Do not forget that, because if you do then what comes out makes no sense whatsoever.
Comparisons
* gpSP last official version was 0.9 by Exophase. There are, however, two superior forks: gpSPmod and gpSP-J. gpSP-J has superior compatibility, while gpSPmod has more options for customization (full screen, cheats, etc). Both are superior to Kai.

* Visual Boy Advance-M (VBA-M) is the best emulator for the GBA. RetroArch's VBA-Next is based off an older revision of VBA-M with added speedhacks and tweaks, making it a bit less accurate in some respects, though it fixes a few games such as Advance Wars 2. Higan's GBA core is cycle-accurate, but is otherwise very much a WIP and not as compatible as either version of VBA.

Emulation issues
Save file issues
There are a number of different save formats for GBA games. With raw save data, it's very hard to detect what save type it is just by looking at it. Visual Boy Advance tries to autodetect save type but often is incorrect and this causes issues. A fix to this issue is to use a file called "vba-over.ini" to tell VBA what each game's proper save type is, which eliminates most issues regarding save type. Current VBA-M versions come with vba-over.ini by default, but older versions of VBA like VBA 1.7.2 and VBALink did not.

The libretro versions of VBA, libretro-VBA-Next and libretro-VBA-M, come with vba-over.ini baked into the binary so it is able to load raw .sav files, but also changes the save file output to be a 136KB .srm file for every save type, with save type info contained within the file. This completely avoids any save type issues, but makes its save files incompatible with standalone VBA and most other emulators.

Libretro devs created a
command line tool to convert libretro-VBA .srm save files to raw .sav save data for other emulators. You can just drag and drop a .srm onto the executable and it will output raw .sav. The same can be done in reverse. A precompiled Windows 64-bit binary of this tool can be found
Comparison
* BGB also has excellent Game Boy and Game Boy Color accuracy, as well as near flawless link support. It has a wealth of options for color palettes and even enabling Super Gameboy colors and borders, though it doesn't emulate all of its functions. Because of that, if you're looking for highest compatibility you should get both Gambatte and BGB so you can switch between them when needed.

* Gambatte is hands-down the most accurate Game Boy/Color emulator. It has a good range of options, though not quite as much as some other emulators.

* GameYob (on the DS) is the best GB/GBC emulator for that platform.

* GeMP has some incompatibilities with later PSP models. GeMP is incompatible with GameCategories folders.

* higan is the only emulator that properly emulates all of the Super Game Boy's features, though the quality of its Game Boy emulation is inferior to that of other emulators, unless one hunts down an older version of bsnes, which used the Gambatte core for its Super Game Boy functionality.

* RIN has some incompatibilities with later PSP models.

* Visual Boy Advance-M (VBA-M) emulates GB/GBC games as they appear on a GBA. This causes games to look unusually bright and saturated.

The PlayStation 3 (known shorthand as PS3) is a console by Sony, released in 2006/2007. This console is notorious for being difficult to work with, due to the newly-introduced Cell Broadband Engine architecture that no game developer outside of Sony has worked with prior to launch.

Comparisons
* RPCS3 is at its very early stages, and it shows a lot of promise. It can boot quite a few commercial games right now, (albeit most of them run at <1FPS, have heavy glitches, and crash pretty early on) and even more games can boot their splash screens. The emulator is improving at a rapid pace - and if it keeps up, then pure end users could probably find use for it in about 4 years.
* Short Waves was made by an unknown developer. It's not known whether the emulator is active or not.

Emulation issues
Due to the complexity of the Cell processor architecture, plus the fact that it would take a LOT of resources to get such games emulated (as an example, see specifications in Dolphin and PCSX2 for their respective consoles), there is no usable emulator for PS3.

The Nintendo 3DS is the latest handheld console by Nintendo, released in 2011. The most notable feature of this console is the use of autostereoscopic (i.e. without glasses) 3D, which can be configured using a slider.

Do not expect the 3DS to be anywhere near fully emulated for a very long time. The system had only started getting hacked for homebrew quite recently, so a full reverse-engineering effort is not going to happen any time soon.

Any site claiming to have a working 3DS emulator is a scam. Anything on that site should be considered malware until proven otherwise.

Comparisons
* 3dmoo is another 3DS emulator, made by experienced developers in the DS hacking scene. It is newer than Citra, but progress is quicker. It now has homebrew compatibility on par with Citra, even being slightly better in some aspects.
* Citra is an extremely early in development 3DS emulator. It is considered experimental, and cannot play any games besides simple homebrew.

Emulation issues
The Nintendo 3DS currently has no functional emulators; this is mainly due to the fact that the hardware has yet to be documented. Once the hardware is well known and its functions are well-documented, emulation can begin. When you take into account the fact that the 3DS supposedly has a high amount of security built-in, this may take a while. Be prepared to wait.

Using other emulation scenes as a reference expect to wait 4-6 years for an emulator to play the majority of games, but it could take as long as 8-10. Buy a 3DS if you can't wait.

The Nintendo DS is a handheld console produced by Nintendo in 2004/2005. Emulating the DS has proven to be a pain for emulator authors due to its rather unusual hardware, although in some cases bugs that occur in emulators are due to the games being poorly-optimized or programmed.
Comparisons
* DeSmuMe is very good, and very well developed but works best with higher end computers. This emulator aims for accuracy over speed but you can tinker with the vast amount of setting to get some extra FPS (see Common Problems and Solutions for tips). If you're still having a hard time running anything without the output playing like syrup try no$gba. DeSmuMe is recommended regardless of your PC power. Like all post-16bit emulators, DeSmuMe isn't perfect. Expect nothing more than 60% at all times.
* No$GBA focuses on speed, and has major compatibility issues and glitches. As this was first a GBA emulator, the 3D added by the DS is still very poorly handled. However, it might be an option for a very low end machine but don't expect a lot of games to run perfectly, or at all. A fan program, no$zoomer, was released for version 2.6 which increases compatibility and more setting, as well as the titular zooming option. the biggest boost is noise cancellation which will clear up the static no$gba makes with 3d rendering. Version 2.7a isn't compatible with no$zoomer yet but does add resizing windows options but any increase of emulating skills is not noticeable. Only use no$gba as a last resort.

Multi system emulators focus on emulating many different systems under one program. They can be focused on a single company's systems because of the similarity of the systems, or may have systems from many different companies.

To be defined as "multi-system" an emulator has to emulate two or more distinct systems. For the purpose of this list, Addons (eg. Sega CD, 32x) are not counted as a separate system.

The Atari Jaguar (AJ) was a console produced by Atari in 1993. Despite the intense marketing efforts by Atari, the Jaguar is in fact a 32-bit console rather than 64-bit, as a whole; only one part of its two CPUs were 64-bit. The console would prove to be the final home console release for Atari, before releasing plug-and-play versions of their older games.

Atari Jaguar CD (AJ-CD) was a CD addon.
Comparison
* Project Tempest was the first ever working Atari Jaguar emulator. It emulates some games, but most have issues. As it's name suggests it was primarily made for Tempest 2000, with other games as secondary goals. Project Tempest only supports two Jaguar CD games; Primal Rage and Baldies (the latter has sound distortion though). It has not been updated since 2004.

* Virtual Jaguar Is an open source emulator based on the original by the same name. It has excellent support and framerate. It is the most compatible jaguar emulator yet. Note; the builds for Virtual Jaguar from EmuCR doesn't seem to work, use the link given as "git" on this page and choose the most current version from there.
It is the first console by Nintendo to output to high-definition (HD) resolutions, such as 720p and 1080p. It includes a tablet-like controller, known as the Wii U GamePad, to provide certain additional gameplay. Notably, it can play all Wii games, as well as supporting the Wii Remote controllers for native Wii U games.

Emulation issues
There are no Wii U emulators. This is due to the fact that this console was only recently released, as well as the fact that the console has yet to be fully hacked. It is rumored that there is a similar level of security in the console as in the Nintendo 3DS, meaning it will also take a while for this to be cracked.
The NGP was only released in Japan, due to its low popularity, however the NGPC was released worldwide. It was the last handheld console produced by SNK.
It is known as TurboGrafx-16 in other regions outside of Japan. PC Engine CD (PC-CD) was a CD addon.
The PC Engine 2 (PCE2) was an upgraded version of the PC Engine that could also play PCE games. In the west it was known as the SuperGrafx. Only 7 games were released for it.
Comparisons
* MagicEngine only has a free demo available. The full version costs €15 EUR. There is no reason to buy it when there are better free options available.
* Mednafen is great. It has two PCE cores: PCE-Fast and PCE-Accurate. It also has a PC-FX core. Its main version is command line. pcejin is a version of Mednafen's PC Engine emulation for Windows with GUI. Linux users should use Mednafen with a GTK GUI.
* Ootake is okay for general purposes.
* RetroArch can run Mednafen's PCE-Fast core.

The Wii is a 2006 console by Nintendo. Because of similarity between the Wii and the GameCube, Wii emulation happened very quickly through GameCube emulation.

The Triforce is an arcade system board developed jointly by Namco, Sega, and Nintendo, with the first games appearing in 2002. The system hardware is based on the Nintendo GameCube with several differences, such as provisions for add-ons such as Sega's GD-ROM system and upgradeable RAM modules. Wii emulators can also play Triforce games.
Comparisons
* Dolphin is the only option for Wii emulation. It is updated on a near daily basis and has very good emulation of almost everything. System requirements are high, moreso for Wii games than GameCube. In addition, it is recommended to sync a Wii remote to play games, as it can be difficult mapping the motion controls to a controller, especially if MotionPlus is required.

The Atari 5200 was a video game console produced by Atari in 1982 as a high-end model of the 2600. It was created to compete with the Intellivision. The 5200 was incompatible with 2600 cartridges until a later revision, making it unpopular compared to existing consoles. Many of its games were simply ports of 2600 titles, but it's an interesting piece of history regardless.

Gamepads
Original controllers
The best way to emulate a console is by using the actual controller for that console. Here are some different adapters that'll let you use those controllers on your PC:
*Mayflash adapters work well and are relatively cheap.
*Bliss-Box is made to order and probably the best adapters you can buy, but they don't come cheap.
*RetroUSB, good adapters, not the best prices.
*RaphNet for making your own NES/SNES controller adapters, can also be purchased pre-made.

PlayStation DualShock
The 3 has a very good d-pad, which is something that's hard to find nowadays. Very useful for older consoles. It also has 10-bit precision analog sticks, pressure sensitive buttons, and it can be used wired or wirelessly with a Bluetooth adapter.

The Dual Shock 3 requires special software to work on a pc. In Windows, an external program needs to be installed to use DS3 controllers. Use the new SCP Driver Package. Do not use MotioninJoy if you can. On Linux, QtSixA is available, but if you run into problems try xboxdrv. See the 3#Troubleshooting page if you run into problems.

The Dual Shock 4 also requires a wrapper to get full functionality on PC, like DS4 to Xinput or SCP Driver Package.

Xbox 360
The 360 controller does offer good ergonomics and many prefer its analog stick layout -though there are a lot who feel otherwise- over other controllers. However, the poor D-pad means it is lackluster when it comes to emulating older consoles.

For the wired 360 controller simply is plug in, install the drivers, and play. For wireless, you will need a wireless adapter to use a wireless controller on a PC.

Logitech USB Gamepad
Logitech also makes good gamepads that plug directly into the USB port on your computer. Their layout is similar to PlayStation DualShock. There is both a wired and wireless one.

*Logitech Gamepad F310 Cheaper wired one
*Logitech Gamepad F710 Uses wireless 2.4 GHz
Miscellaneous USB Gamepads
There are also cheaper gamepads made by various other companies. However their build quality may not be as good as Logitech. Some of them are made to be duplicates of console controllers which may be useful when emulating consoles controllers with non standard layouts like the N64 controller.
Arcade Sticks
Arcade sticks mimic arcade controls. They are typically used by fighting game fans, but can be used for emulation as well.

X-Arcade
http://www.xgaming.com X-Arcade sticks are designed primarily for MAME users but the controls can be easily mapped to any button. Generally considered tacky to use a prebuilt control pannel with a home made MAME cabinet but is acceptable to use as a standalone controller. Prices range from $99 to $200

Mad Catz
http://store.madcatz.com Mad Catz sell a wide variety of arcade sticks for the Xbox 360 but function perfectly well with most operating systems with a little configuration and behave like a normal wired Xinput controller.

Mobile Gamepads
Pretty much any bluetooth controller will work with an Andriod or iPhone for emulation. Some recommended controllers:
* 3 ($40) Good quality controller
* Nyko Playpad Pro ($20) Cheap controller. Has similar layout as DualShock 3.
* Moga Controller ($20) Cheap controller, comes with a clip to attach phone.
* Gametel ($30) Smaller controller, comes with a clip to attach phone. Has similar to layout to NES controller

Motion Controller
Wiimote
Wiimote
For emulating Wii games, this is an option if you want to use the real controller. You can connect your Wiimote to your PC using this guide. If your computer does not have Bluetooth you will need to get a compatible USB Bluetooth adapter, this one has been known to work. In order for the Wiimote pointer to be detected, you'll need a wireless sensor bar or 2 candles.

Light Gun
Traditional light guns rely on the behavior of CRT monitors and TVs to function. There are light guns that do not rely on the monitor for positioning but behave more like wiimotes using IR light.. The accuracy is not as good but most people can adjust fairly quickly. Within most emulators the sensor in the light gun behaves like a mouse and usually require no special drivers for setup.
AimTrak
http://www.ultimarc.com/aimtrak.html

Works with all monitors including CRT, LCD, and plasma. The package comes with both the USB gun (an infrared receiver) & a USB-to-infrared transmitter bar that sits on top of the screen. The calibration software for Windows XP/Vista/7 is available on the Ultimarc website, but it's also been confirmed to work on Windows 8 (no drivers are required; the unit works as a mouse). The gun kit is also designed to work on Playstation 2 & 3 consoles as well as in Linux (again, as a mouse,) though there are no official calibration programs for Linux.

The GameCube (GCN) is a 2001 console produced by Nintendo. Due to how similar the architecture is between the GameCube, Triforce and Wii, many GameCube emulators offer support for them.

The Triforce is an arcade system board developed jointly by Namco, Sega, and Nintendo, with the first games appearing in 2002. The system hardware is based on the Nintendo GameCube with several differences, like provisions for add-ons such as Sega's GD-ROM system and upgradeable RAM modules.

Due to having very similar (albeit more powerful) hardware, the Wii is able to natively play GameCube games rather than emulating them.
Comparisons
* Dolphin is the only real emulator you should use; Gekko is still in very early development after being on hiatus for many years, and is nowhere near achieving Wii emulation either. In addition, for Triforce emulation, MAME is not optimised for 3D systems yet, nor is the emulation of the system in question very good either. Dolphin is updated on a near daily basis and has very good emulation of almost everything. System requirements are high, moreso for Wii games than GameCube.
* Dolphin (Nintendo) is an official emulator by Nintendo of the same name as the recommended Dolphin emulator. The two are unrelated; the official Nintendo emulator does not run commercial games.

Running BIOS
If you want to open games through the Gamecube's original BIOS in Dolphin, first make sure the external framebuffer is enabled, the sound to be set to LLE, and uncheck "skip bios" in the Gamecube options. When the game window opens and the GCN startup animation begins, click File then Change Disc. You can pick literally any file, including the game you initially chose.
When the intro ends, it will go into the Gamecube's menu instead of the game. You can then switch to whatever game you really wanted to
play with Change Disc, or explore the BIOS.

Issues
Mednafen memory cards
To transfer memory cards, follow this guide. Also, in games with multiple discs with saves that carry over, you have to follow the same procedure.
NetPlay
Cores that work with NetPlay:
*PC Engine (TurboGrafx-16)/PC-CD/SuperGrafx (option for both accuracy and fast cores)
*PC-FX
*NES
*Genesis (experimental but mostly functional; 2 Players only)
*Master System
*SNES
*PlayStation

colspan=2 width="250"|Review
PROS ||
*You can make and load savestates
*Netcode allows for people to join a game that's already in session
*In-game chat
*Playing it fullscreen works (sometimes)
CONS ||
*Command-line only (you can use a frontend, though)
*Weird, convoluted settings (or lack thereof)
*SNES emulation will be slow to you if you're on a low-end computer (uses bsnes core)
*PlayStation is inexplicably slow (haven't checked to see what core it uses, but probably has one that's focused on accuracy)
*Only supports 2 Players on Genesis.
*Frontend doesn't always save settings correctly.
*Frontend defaults to detecting compressed ROM archives instead of the actual ROMs (you can still load uncompressed ROMs by selecting "All files *.*" from the dropdown menu).

colspan=1 |How to

To be defined as "multi-system" an emulator has to emulate two or more distinct systems. For the purpose of this list, Addons (eg. Sega CD, 32x) are not counted as a separate system.
Comparisons
1. bsnes (higan)
* The most accurate of the bunch. Should play any and all commercially released games without trouble, assuming you have the power.
* A Core 2 Duo at 2 GHz is the weakest I've seen run the balanced version full speed for most games.
* Balanced works. You do NOT need the accuracy build for anything but one game. And it's just a missing shadow even for that.
* ROM hacks designed around emulator quirks will most likely not work. Same as with real hardware.
* LLE audio sounds amazing.

2. Snes9x
* Compatible with most games, even many romhacks that make use of emulator quirks.
* Fast enough for pretty much any toaster (think Pentium 1 or 2, yes I tested!)
* LLE audio, same as bsnes's.
* Often buggy graphical output and shader support in standalone
** Driver/GPU dependent.
** Remember those diagonal lines of offset across older 3D games on certain graphics cards? Yeah. Finding a picture.
* Hit and miss controller support, especially when it comes to XInput devices.

3. RetroArch, which has bsnes, and Snes9x cores.
* The same points as the emulators themselves
* Amazing graphical output
** At any resolution
** At any fullscreen resolution and refresh rate
** Vast shader support
* Dynamic rate control kills off most any and all audio distortion, such as crackling.
* Does not require Game Folders or anything like higan standalone.

5. BizHawk
* Useful for TAS (Tool Assisted Speedruns)
* Written in C#, requires .NET 4.0
* Windows-only

5. Mednafen
* The SNES core is based on bSNES 059 which is rather old from 2010. It pre-dates the performance/balanced/accuracy builds. This version is much faster than the current version.
* Missing many of the LLE audio improvements that newer versions of Snes9x and Higan use currently.
* The version of bsnes that Mednafen is using is missing out on many accuracy updates that particularly impacts a few edge case games such as Air Strike Patrole. The signifigance of this game is it was one of two games known to manipulate the PPU mid-scanline and is notoriously difficult to emulate. Some of the problems Mednafen has versus newer cores is poorly rendered text, flickering lines near the bottom of the screen, and missing shadow during flight.
* While acceptable for many games its recommended to use Snes9x, Higan, or RetroArch instead.

6. ZSNES
* Will run full speed on very old x86 systems such as an early Pentium 1.
* Romhacks were often designed around it's speedhacks and many won't work properly on anything else.
* Though fans have modded this, it is basically a dead emulator with no future.
* Many bugs and lacked functions for many games, see ZSNES review
* Polarizing Graphical user interface (loved by some, hated by others)
MVS and AES are technically the same system, but their cartridges are not compatible with each other due a different layout.
Neo Geo CD (NG-CD) was the CD version of the AES (not compatible with the game cartridges)

Hyper Neo-Geo 64 (HNG-64) was the successor to the Neo-Geo with 3D graphics, no home console release.
Their takes on Nintendo intellectual property were infamously terrible that you would be hard-pressed to find anyone who doesn't think of them when you mention the CD-i. However, there were a few cult classic games on the system.
* Cdiemu is payware that hasn't been updated since 2006. Its compatibility isn't very good and it only responds to mouse movements for control, making most games unplayable unless you use an additional program called Mah Boi.
* MESS has support for CD-i, which is also incomplete, but much easier to control, and it actually emulates better audio than Cdiemu in some cases. It is recommended to start the emulation with the game already loaded, either with the game picker or through a soft reset after mounting the disk.
* Xbox 360 is backwards compatible, but it is not 100% like the Wii is with the GameCube. While some work off the bat, some need patches downloaded and even then there are still issues with many games from graphical glitches and slowdown to full blown programming fails (falling through floors in Half Life 2).

Emulation issues
The common misconception with the Xbox is that due to being x86-based, it should be easier to emulate. This couldn't be more wrong . While the x86 architecture itself is fairly well documented, it is HUGE, as well as the fact that the specific hardware components within the Xbox are not very well documented at all, especially the Nvidia components. This has meant that overall compatibility of emulators for Xbox have been extremely low, supporting only a handful of games.

The Xbox One is an eighth-generation console produced by Microsoft in 2013. Early in its life, it was heavily criticised for intrusive DRM, such as always-online and lack of used game sharing. These have since been removed. Notably, this console runs on the x86 architecture, so is essentially a PC.
Emulation issues
Do note that just because this console runs on the same architecture as PCs does NOT mean it will be easier to emulate! Quite the opposite, in fact: for example, see Xbox, which also runs on x86. Due to being such a complex architecture and undocumented hardware, it will take a VERY long time to make an emulator for it.
