Comparisons
; MAME
: Very extensive in scope, with the majority of arcade system boards from the 1970's, 1980's and early 1990's supported, with a minor amount of games from the 2000s being bootable and another minority of thise being playable, but buggy. Do not expect support for more recent boards, such as Atomiswave. MAME focuses on accuracy and preservation, meaning usability comes second for the end user. Only the most up-to-date ROM dumps will work in the latest MAME.

; Neo
: A fork of the now-inactive Alpha. Supports many boards, such as Neo Geo, Capcom CPS1-3, and others. It is very good for the boards it supports. The Neo Geo X system, in fact, uses FBA. It offers much better speeds on lower-end hardware than MAME and has been ported to many different devices. It has a smaller ROMset than MAME, but the ROMs are identical for the machines they share. If you have a system that is incapable of running the newest version of MAME, it is generally recommended to use FinalBurn Neo instead of a very old version of MAME.

; Visual PinMAME
: An emulator for the electronics of pinball systems. The simulation of most modern pinball machines (especially those made after 1992, using large portions of DMD animations and digital sound samples) require the PinMAME (sometimes referred to as VPinMAME or VPM) program in order to behave as close to the physical machine as possible. PinMAME is a fork from old MAME code and can be loaded as a DLL in Visual Pinball. MAME can emulate the electronics for quite a few pinball systems aswell but doesn’t include physics simulation for the pinball table part and no simulator supports using MAME for emulation.

; DICE
: Emulates old arcade machines from the early 1970's <!--(including Coleco Telstar Arcade)--> at a very high level of accuracy. Since these machines had no CPU, the emulator instead emulates discrete logic components in the circuit board. This method is very system-intensive, and getting full speed requires at least a mid-range gaming PC along with the 64-bit version of the emulator. Due to incompatibility with the newest Windows, the program will need to be run in compatibility mode or else it would crash when attempting to run a game.

; Supermodel
: Emulates Sega's Model 3 arcade platform focusing on accuracy. Presently, Supermodel is in a very early "alpha" stage of development, meaning it lacks many planned features. It does not yet have a user-friendly graphical interface, and all CPUs are emulated using straightforward (and slow) interpretation rather than fast just-in-time translation. Game compatibility is quite good. It has an experimental multi-player network build.

; Model 2 Emulator
: Emulates, as per its name, Sega's Model 2 arcade platform with a focus on speed over accuracy. Despite this, however, it still manages to play games for that hardware with far higher accuracy than MAME currently can.

; Virtual Console
: Emulates Sega, Namco, Capcom and Tecmo arcade games, as well as the Neo Geo. It is a viable method for official emulation, but forces you to play like you would on a real arcade machine.

; Arcade Archives
: Emulates Namco, Tecmo, Konami, and Taito arcade games, as well as the Neo Geo. It is a viable method for official emulation but forces you to play like you would on a real arcade machine.
Machines
Machines often varied by their design and, unlike consoles, were often tailored to just one game. Games were designed to eat as many quarters as possible, which is emulated with the "Coin" key. Some games have a service mode (mapped to F2 in MAME) with menus meant for the arcade owner to set dipswitches for difficulty, censorship, language, and most importantly a "Free Play" mode that allows players to continue as many as they want without requesting more coins. Sometimes, similar menus meant for developers (labeled debug or test usually, sometimes requiring a developer BIOS like with some Neo Geo games) are left in the game too.

Discrete circuitry-based
The earliest arcade games lacked any type of CPU, consisting only of discrete logic components. The first arcade video game, as well as the first commercial game, released was Computer Space in 1971.

Comparisons
; DICE
: The emulator works by simulating each logic chip on the board individually.
; MAME
: As of version .208, Breakout, Galaxy Game, Pong, Pong Doubles, and Rebound are working in MAME.
; HBMAME
: HBMAME is a derivative of MAME, and contains various hacks and homebrews. It is based on the latest MAME source at the time of release. Has support for a remake of Monaco G.P. which was Sega's final game to rely primarily upon discrete analog circuitry - an oddity for a game made in 1979, some three years after microprocessors were introduced to the market. As this was among the most complex games of its kind, don't bet on seeing it working in MAME anytime soon.

emulating these hardware

Original hardware
Hardware made specifically for the arcade to provide for graphics and performance unseen on home consoles. Extremely common in the golden age of arcades but became much less frequent as companies used modified existing hardware instead to save on R&D costs and easier cross-platform development, or tried to differentiate between the home and arcade experience with control scheme gimmicks instead.

MAME's purpose is to cover most of these. Older arcades as well as select popular arcade machines, the Neo Geo and Capcom's CPS series, in particular, received their own standalone emulators. Sometimes, they received their own console versions but those are mostly ports, not emulation, with very few exceptions.Arcade game compatibility list
emulating these hardware

Home console-based hardware
Those arcade boards share most of the hardware specifications with existing home consoles, with the addition of a coin slot, and occasionally DRM and some other changes. While MAME supports most of those, standalone emulators for the base home console are more mature and often (but not always) support the arcade variants.
PC-based hardware
Based on normal PC architecture with a variation of Windows or Linux installed, and tons of DRM and custom drivers. These can still be accessed on their respective OS normally, but they cannot be run without an I/O board. They can only be run using the right launchers (Game loader All RH, SpiceTools, idmacx tools, TeknoParrot...) but most of them likely won't be emulated by MAME anytime soon, and not just because of their policies on what hardware is too recently commercialized to cover.
The games first need to run on an operating system equivalent to that of the machine, which may imply Wine use on Linux or having to upgrade to 64-bit editions. Some GPUs or wrappers may be required. Additionally, the following need to be installed:

* Microsoft Visual C++ Runtimes: A one-in-all link for all editions from 2005 to 2015 may be found here.
* Microsoft .NET Frameworks: Any version from 1.0 to 4.8.1 may be required, the newer, the better.
* Microsoft DirectX 9.0: Offline installer here.
* PC Video Codecs: Grabbing the standard K Lite Codec pack from here is recommended.

Remember to backup data from the downloaded scene release before trying to fix it to run.

* Launcher: The game needs this to work at all. There are many: Jconfig, TeknoParrot... and each game requires a specific launcher. If you got the dump from elsewhere, not in a clean state that doesn't work, it may be because of conflicting launchers and you will have to delete all of them (typically <code>Detoured.dll, Game loader Rh.exe, Typex_config.exe, Typex_loader.exe, TTXconfig 2.0, TTX-moniter.dll</code>...)
* iDmacDrv32.dll: Needed in Nesica games. If present, do not delete it, copy Jconfig.exe and the replacement iDmacDrv32.dll from the Jconfig package, then double-click NesicaXlive.reg to import keys to your registry, and use the game executable to run the game. If not present, copy Jconfig.exe, JVSemu.dll, and jvs_loader.exe from the Jconfig package, and use jvs_loader.exe to run the game.
* Save Fixes: Some games can't save scores and data at all. For a bunch of machines, there are fixes (called "loaders pack") that enable that, but some machines (nesica) handle saving purely using official servers in which case there's not much (yet) to do about it.
* Unpacked exe/dll Files: Some games, especially SEGA games, can't be executed on regular PCs as their game logic is wrapped in dlls (htsysmnt.dll etc.) in the operating system comes with the arcade hardware. Unpacked exe/dll files unwrapped such game logic so they can be executed properly. Just drop these files to where the original exe/dll is located and execute/load these files in loaders to start the game.
* Local Server: Some games, especially recent Konami and SEGA games, require network service provided by manufacture in order to save progress, unlock game contents, or even start the game itself. Local server programs (Asphyxia, Minime, Aqua, etc.) emulate such network service on the local computer which makes games bootable and network-related functionalities work. These tools have to be started before starting the game, and kept running during the game session, and game launchers have to be configured to make games communicate with them. Notice that not all functionalities (especially corner case ones such as e-cash, player camera, etc.) in every version of every game work, and some games would require extra fixes to properly communicate with the local server. Check readme files provided by developers or game scenes for more information.
* Extra Fixes: Varies per game. Check the readme with the game scene release.

You can set your controls in Jconfig.exe, and it's recommended to disable Dsound and D3D Wrapper.

Some games can have DirectX related problems. For some, deleting the existing d3d9.dll or opengl.dll files can help. For others, they expect the older D3D8 codec and have bugs (crashes, uneven speed) that can be fixed with Reshade's d3d8to9 plugin.
emulators that run on the NEC PC-9800 series
The NEC PC-9800, also known as the PC-98, was a family of computers made by NEC from 1982 to 2007. Despite using Intel x86 processors, MS-DOS, and many other similarities, the series is not IBM compatible. Some PC-98 software may work on an IBM or vice versa, but this is very <abbr title="Your Mileage May Vary">YMMV</abbr>. In fact, the introduction of a native Japanese version of standard MS-DOS in the early 90s and subsequent entry of cheaper foreign IBM clones in the Japanese market resulted in the end of the PC-98 as a distinct platform. They were not released or marketed outside Japan, besides a few attempts such as the APC-III and PC-9801FC.

The PC-98 was made with office work in mind and corners had to be cut to make this machine more affordable, which was especially evident in the slow speed of its framebuffer. As a result it was very impractical to achieve 60 FPS especially in higher resolutions (which were seen often because they made kanji more legible), so the PC-98 became a home of many slower-paced games, mainly visual novels, but also JRPGs and adventure games among other genres. A particular specialty of the PC-98 was eroge (such as the cult classic YU-NO), since developers didn't have to abide by strict content regulations typical of consoles thanks to the PC-98 being an open platform. Faster-paced games were less popular, leaving that to Sharp X68000, FM-Towns, arcades, and consoles, but some were made for this machine, including the five first entries of the famous Touhou series, which were significantly different from later releases. It was later possible to run Windows on the PC-98 and install a Windows-compatible fast SVGA graphics card, but games made specifically for PC-98 DOS couldn't take advantage of this.
Comparisons
;Neko Project II:The best PC-98 emulator out there but went inactive since March 2016. Its major drawback is the non-remappable controls.
:;Neko Project 21/W:Based on Neko Project II but with a focus on PC-9821 series with enhanced options (CPUs, memory sizes, sound sources) as well as support for LAN board, PCI bus, CD-DA, windows accelerators, fmgen and so on.
:;Neko Project II kai:A more libretro-focused fork, which has also merged several improvements from 21/W.
:;Xnp2: A port of Neko Project II to Unix-like systems.
;Anex86:Another decent PC-98 emulator, which emulates wikipedia:EPSON_PC%E3%82%B7%E3%83%AA%E3%83%BC%E3%82%BA EPSON PC-286/386/486 series which is a series of PC-98 clone computers made by EPSON Corporation rather than PC-98 series made by NEC. older and less powerful. It allows key rebinding. Some programs may have trouble running on this emulator due to so-called "EPSON protection" that prevents them from running on EPSON clones.
;DOSBox-X:A very active fork of DOSBox that, among other things, adds support for the PC-98 as a target system. While it's very easy to set up, its PC-98 system is not yet complete.
;MAME:It has drivers for various revisions but as of version 0.189, all of them are reported as <font color="darkred">Not Working</font>. Support for the first batch or so of PC-98 games have started to be added to MAME in 0.201 (Aug 2018). As of Version 0.282, NEC PC-9801RS, and the clones: NEC PC-9821Ap2/U8W have been promoted to working status and are considered playable. However, emulation is still incomplete.
;SL9821: Yet another PC-98 emulator that has quite high accuracy. Requires extra ROM files for BIOS and other subsystems (sound card, IDE controller, etc.) of the hardware. Floppy disks and HDD images have to be converted to either proprietary *.slf/*.slh files or *.bin raw images.
;ePC-9801: Emulator focusing on PC-9801 series. The only emulator that supports 1120x750 high-resolution mode presented in some models. Requires extra ROM files for BIOS and other subsystems (sound card, IDE controller, etc.) of the hardware. Emulation for each model is released as individual exes which are designed to emulate that specific model, which disallows adjusting options such as RAM size and mix-and-matching peripherals. Accuracy seems still a lot to be improved.
;QEMU/9821: A fork of QEMU that supports PC-9800 architecture. No longer maintained. Able to boot MS-DOS, Windows 98 and Windows 2000, but software compatibility is hit or miss.
;eMD-1: A commercial emulator which the purpose is to replace PC-98s used in industrial devices in order to keep them running long after the demise of PC-98 series. Not available for individuals and probably comes with an outrageous price.
;86Box: A x86 platform emulator that already has excellent compatibility with IBM PC software, which has plans to add support for PC-98 standard on the future v5.0 update (Issue #3525), that it could also make it the first Cycle-accurate emulator for this computer.
GPUs
For more information about the graphics subsystem of PC-98, Reference to this documentation.

Most of the games won't require graphics subsystems that are more advanced than EGC, and basically, all emulators have achieved full emulation of EGC, so whether an emulator could emulate more advanced graphic systems doesn't really bug.

However, some games do make use of more advanced graphics subsystems, such as some AliceSoft's adult games which support 256 color mode of IO-DATA's GA-1024A, and games originating from IBM PC such as Doom, Warcraft: Orcs & Humans, etc. may make use of PEGC due to its similarities with VGA graphics.

Specifically, it's possible to install a totally out-of-spec graphic card, such as Nvidia GeForce FX 5700LE on later PC-98 models with PCI bus, but such scenarios are quite obscure and no emulators support such cases.

As workstations, PC-H98 series have a dedicated high resolution mode with 1120x750 resolution and 256 in 16 million colors palette. Games rarely use this mode, if at all.

The PC-FXGA (GA stands for Game Accelerator) was a series of computer boards and sports the same hardware as a regular PC-FX with the exception of an additional processor the HuC6273 that can handle 3D graphics. PC-FXGA is used to play PC-FX games on PC-9800 series computer and IBM compatible computers but also makes possible for enthusiast to develop their own games.

Notice that an emulator supporting a graphic subsystem doesn't necessarily mean such an emulator is mature enough for programs that make use of it to work properly.
Sound
Most of the DOS games make use PC-9801-26(K) which provides 3 channels of FM, 3 channels of PSG, or PC-9801-86 which provides 6 channels of FM, 3 channels of PSG, and PCM recording & playback.

For Windows, PC-9801-118 provides support for both FM and PCM playback as a PnP & Windows Sound System compatible card, but not fully backward compatible with PC-9801-86 under MS-DOS. Q-Vision WaveStar is yet another PnP card for Windows but is fully backward compatible.

Alternatively, games originating from IBM PC such as Doom may have the option to make use of Sound Blaster 16.

Other sound options such as PC-9801-14 exist, but are not commonly used.

When it comes to MIDI, most of the emulators are capable of redirecting PC-98's MIDI output (MPU-PC98) to MIDI devices on the host computer, including the built-in GS Synthesizer in Windows. Dosbox-x also provides extra emulation for Roland MT-32.
Keyboard and mouse
PC-98 keyboard layout presents keys that aren't available on IBM PC keyboards. Most of the emulators will map them to other keys on IBM PC keyboards, but only Anex86 and SL9821 support manually remapping these keys.

Just like IBM PC keyboards, the Later PC-98 keyboard also introduced Windows and Context keys alongside the introduction of Windows 95. Only Neko Project 21/W, and Dosbox-x support emulation of Windows and Context key.

There are also other keyboard layouts for PC-98, such as PC-9801-114 (for PC-PTOS), PC-9801-116 (IBM PC layout for PC-98), and PC-9801-98-S02 (for using with some kind of word processor). These keyboards are rarely supported even on actual PC-98 and no emulator supports emulating these layouts yet.

Most of the emulators are capable of emulating the mouse interface and mouse on PC-98.

Some late models of PC-98 come with USB keyboard and mouse (and surprisingly, they are still supported by modern versions of Windows), but no emulator supports emulation of USB bus yet.

CD-ROM
Neko Project 21/W, Neko Project II, SL9821, and Dosbox-x support emulation of CD-ROM drive attached to IDE bus. SL9821 also supports using a physical optical drive.

Just like IBM PCs, MSCDEX is required to access CD-ROM under MS-DOS.
Recommended to see Ripping games and Disc Drive emulation pages.

ROM-BASIC
PC-98 series have N88-BASIC interpreter built into the system ROM, despite not many programs being written in BASIC or bare-metal assembly running under N88-BASIC.

Neko Project 21/W, Neko Project II, SL9821, and ePC-9801 supports ROM-BASIC. Specifically, Neko Project 21/W and Neko Project II require an extra BIOS.rom file in order to enter ROM-BASIC.

Simply remove all HDD and FDDs then power on to enter ROM-BASIC.

Networking
Neko Project 21/W supports the emulation of the Buffalo LGY-98 LAN adapter. A TAP virtual network adapter driver is required to be installed on the host machine in order to connect the emulator to the host machine in host-only mode by default. Bridged and NAT-enabled Internet access is also available by setting up the TAP virtual network adapter on the host machine.

DOSBox-X's emulation of the Novell NE2000 adapter does not work under PC-98 mode.

Cassette
It's possible to add a cassette interface (PC-9801-13) to some early models of PC-98 and use it in ROM-BASIC, despite this cassette interface is rarely used.

Only ePC-9801 supports emulation of cassette interface.

Usage
:<small>Note: This tutorial was adapted from this resource.</small>

The PC-9800 series of personal computers had floppy disk drives (FDD) and hard drives (HDD) which contained the actual games and software to be loaded. Besides the emulator, you'll need a set of floppy disk images (FDI, FDM, NFD, D88...) or a hard disk image (HDI, HDM, NHD...).

You'll need a font if you want text characters to display properly in most cases. It can be downloaded here. Put it in the same directory as the emulator executable, and select it (Emulate/Font for Neko Project II, or Config/Font for Anex86).

You'll need to configure the emulator as well. In NP2's case, you want to go with the recommended configuration here:

* Emulate/Configure/CPU: Number of cores to something like 32.
* Emulate/Configure/Sound: Rate to 44k or 88k for better sound quality.
* Device/Memory: 13.6MB
* Screen/Screen Option: Check "Use skipline revisions", and change Ratio to 255. This gets rid of the existing scan line implementation, in case you want a better one with shaders from external programs. Keep in mind PC-98 games, more than any other system, are often graphically designed with scanlines in mind.

To play the games:
* If using a floppy disk based game: Plug the first disk (FDI) into FDD1, and the second disk (FDI) into FDD2.
* If using a hard drive based game: Plug the hard drive (HDI) into Harddisk/IDE #0 (if using Anex86, use the HDD1 and HDD2 fields and check the box HDD>FDD).

Then restart the machine (not emulator), and most games automatically launch from there.

Neko Project II's controls are not remappable. They're 2, 4, 6, and 8 on the numpad, arrow keys, enter, space, ctrl, z, and x. For games using the mouse, hit F12 to enable or disable mouse input. Use programs like Joy2Key to rebind other keys.

Hardware variations and spin-offs
APC-III
The APC-III is basically rebranded the original PC-9801, targeted at the western market.

No emulator specifically emulates this model, and it's unknown whether APC-III software could be run on regular PC-98 hardware, or otherwise.

PC-9801FC
A PC-9801F with Chinese character ROM replaced its Japanese Kanji ROM and addressed in a different scheme, targeted at the Chinese market.

Despite no emulators specifically emulating this model, PC-9801FC software could run on regular PC-98, hence it's possible to run them with regular PC-98 emulators, but all non-ASCII text strings will become gibberish as their character ROMs are encoded in different schemes unless feeding in the character ROM of PC-9801FC either as ROM file or character mapping image into the emulator, which is not yet in public.

PC-9801LT
NEC's first attempt at mobilizing PC-98 which is not so successful, ended up with a machine with 3.8kg of weight and not fully compatible with the regular PC-98 series.

Only MAME and ePC-98LT provide emulation of this model and both are in preliminary stages.

PC-98HA (Handy98)
A handheld-sized PC-98, which is still not fully compatible with the regular PC-98 series as it's more similar to PC-9801LT in architecture.

Only MAME and eHANDY98 provide emulation of this model and both are in preliminary stages.

N5200
Despite N5200 being a different series of computers of NEC in the beginning, later N5200 models are just Hyper98 computer hardware with different BIOS.

Only eN5200 provides the emulation of this model, while this emulator is in the very early stages and seems no longer active.

iNHERITOR II-A
iNHERITOR II-A is an emulation box manufactured by ZUKEN ELMIC, which the purpose is to replace PC-98s used in industrial devices in order to keep them running long after the demise of PC-98 series.

iNHERITOR II-A is an IBM PC powered by Intel Core i7 processor, running Windows Embedded 2009 and a customized PC-98 emulator (which seems to be a fork of Neko Project II judging from its menu bar), and equipped with a special PCI card and C-bus breakout board that could redirect actual PC-98 floppy drive, serial port and C-bus devices to the emulator, which makes it possible to control industrial devices relying on PC-98 via IBM PCs.

There is little to no information about the technical details of its customized PC-98 emulator and related hardware.
Its hardware allowed for close-to-arcade-perfect games to be made for the system (it was used as a devkit for Capcom CP System games for example), although adult games from PC-98 crept in thanks to the competitor's popularity.
The X68000 to SUPER models had a Hitachi HD68HC000 CPU at 10 MHz. The XVI to Compact models had a Motorola 68000 at 16 MHz. The X68030 has a Motorola MC68EC030 CPU at 25 MHz. They had 1-4MB of RAM and 1MB of VRAM. It had a Sharp-Hudson Custom Chipset as its GPU.
Comparisons
;XM6
:XM6 is an emulator for the Sharp X68000 by PI. Its source code has been released.
:;XM6 Pro-68k
::It is a derived from the venerable XM6, which was developed by PI. Focused on providing necessary debugging features and has decent compatibility.
:;XM6 TypeG
::Another fork of XM6. It can run in X68030 mode in high accuracy, good peripheral/expansion support and will run just about any game you throw at it.
:;XM6i
::XM6i is an unofficial port of the Japanese Sharp X68000 computer emulator XM6 for Windows, Mac OS X & NetBSD, and built largely around being able to run NetBSD/X68k. While it can run games, it is clear that this is not what XM6i is focused on.
;MAME
:MAME has excellent X68000 emulation these days, including its trademark fully configurable peripheral cards. A lot of graphical bugs were fixed back in 2021, so all of the games people talk about (and several they don't) run quite well. And you can output MIDI music to MUNT or a real hardware MT-32 or SC-55.
;px68k
:An open-source fork of the c68k emulator. px68k has a libretro core but lacks options like save states present in other emulators. It lacks MIDI emulation.
:;px68k-libretro
::It is supported on Windows, GNU/Linux and macOS systems; and has portable versions for PSP, Android, and other platforms. Games' performance on this emulator (Both PC & mobile variants) is considerably faster than what MAME's X68 core can achieve. This libretro branch was forked, starting on May 3, 2017, from hissorii's old build (Last updated on August 2014), backported 'c68k' core from kenyahiro's 'px68k' branch (fork of hissorii's 'px68k' branch using recent c68k yabause core to support X64 build). The Pandora version (An open-source handheld PC) by ptitSeb was forked from hissorii's 'px68k' branch and encapsulates the latest code from px68k-libretro (A spin-off of hissorii's branch). It should now have good performance as of Build 09 (March 2018).

Playing Games
Before first using the RetroArch core for px68k, make sure to go under the directory for BIOS files ("system" by default) and create a new folder called "keropi". Then inside that folder put cgrom.dat and iplrom.dat from this pack. If you're using standalone Pro-68k, put those two files under the same directory as the emulator executable.

If you're using MAME's core under RetroArch, you'll need to put those X68000 BIOS files under the keropi folder: x68000, x68000 super, x68000 XVI, x68030, x68k_cz6bs1.

You'll need the MS Gothic font installed on your PC as well. Make sure to decompress the games before playing them. The lzh extension means it's a compressed archive format popular in Japan in the nineties, but fortunately, it's handled by any zipping tool worth its salt (like 7-zip).

While in-game, the F12 key (or L2 button) brings up a menu, "SWITCH for px68k", that's still in Japanese.
;FDD0, FDD1: Floppy Disk Drive slots 0 and 1. You can choose another ROM from here (preferably from the current drive letter). Simpler games will use just FDD0, some like Nemesis '90 will have two disks to be loaded on FDD0 and FDD1, and multi-disk games will require going to this menu in-game at some point to change the disk image.
;No Wait Mode: This makes fast-forwarding work in RetroArch if turned on.

On px68k-libretro, After the first boot, a “config” file will be generated in the “keropi” folder. You can enter your rom folder into the “StartDir” line to make it accessible from the px68k-libretro core’s in-game menu.

Core options include some other things of interest:
* Amount of RAM used
* CPU Clock Speed: Useful when games run too fast (for example changing from 25MHz to 10MHz to play Arkanoid as intended), or to speed up floppy disk loading times (by changing it to something like 100MHz for example).
* Sound: 44kHz for Audio-CD sound quality is recommended.
