A LaserDisc video game is an arcade game that uses pre-recorded video (either live-action or animation) played from a LaserDisc. The first LaserDisc video game was Sega's
Astron Belt released in 1983. The genre was popularized by Dragon's Lair released shortly after in the same year. The usage of LaserDiscs provided graphics close to an animated or live-action film which was vastly ahead of other arcade games at the time. However, with the drawback of limited interactivity compared to regular arcade games.

Comparisons
*DAPHNE is the primary emulator for LaserDisc arcade games. Supports more games than MAME. Use DaphneLoader to update DAPHNE and auto download games. The libretro core currently only works for Android.
:*Hypseus Singe is an SDL2 update to the DAPHNE emulator engine. It includes fixes to many existing Daphne games and supports one game that neither Daphne nor MAME currently support: Stern's Goal to Go. Support for SINGE simulation is also built-in. Re-imagined versions of the Action Max, Captain Power XT-7 and SEGA Video Driver VHS games are now supported via simulation. There are 4JZPyoFf_JE SDL2 allows over the original engine: Supporting enhanced 4k MPEG-2 video, including multiple screen support, integrated bezels, hot-pluggable GameControllers, lightgun support and a 32-bit upgrade on the Daphne VLDP software laserdisc player. This allows support for the full range of extended run-time fan-made games introduced in Singe 2. Hypseus also runs a 32-bit overlay on Singe games, this can be reverted to the original 8-bit via command-line arguments. The diversity of the engine means Hypseus can run on a multitude of hardware including SBCs, such as the Raspberry Pi, R36S handhelds and their kin.
:*DirkSimple is a libretro core for LaserDisc arcade games but it has limited compatibility support and doesn't plan to support more FMV games. Unlike Hypseus Singe, it requires you to create .ogv file from your .ogg and .m2v DAPHNE capture files using FFmpeg. See How do i use DirkSimple guide for additional required steps.
*MAME The reason MAME doesn't emulate many LaserDisc-based systems, is largely due to indecisions regarding the disc preservation method and format. This will hopefully be fixed in the future thanks to the Domesday86 project which employs a combination of specialized hardware and open-source software to preserve the discs in a far more faithful manner than ever before. Raw captures can be converted to playback formats for other emulators (e.g., Hypseus-Singe) using ffmpeg to get the best visual quality. See wq5HTAIowK4 video. Also, recommended to see Ripping games#Analog section for more information.
emulators that run on the PlayStation 2

The PlayStation 2 (PS2) is a sixth-generation console released by Sony on October 26, 2000, and it retailed for USD. It has the Emotion Engine CPU based on the MIPS R5900 at 300 MHz with 32 MB of RDRAM system memory and 4 MB of eDRAM (VRAM). Its GPU was a custom Graphics Synthesizer, which ran at 150 MHz. It became the highest-selling console of all time, with over 160 million units sold. 160,636,885 units were produced in total during its production lifespan from January 2000 to March 2013. Similar to Game Boy (Color), the PS2's sales record is particularly significant when compared to very popular modern hardware like the Nintendo Switch. Despite the Switch operating in a modern era with a significantly larger global population and a vastly expanded "gamer" demographic, it has struggled to surpass the PS2's total. Between 2000 and 2013, the total addressable market for gaming was smaller, and global purchasing power in emerging markets (in Asia and South America) was even lower than it is today. The PS2's ability to reach 160 million units in a less saturated, lower-population market highlights a level of market penetration that remains unmatched in the industry.

Announced in 1999, Sony began developing the console after the immense success of the PlayStation. The PlayStation 2 offered backward-compatibility for the DualShock controller, as well as its games. One of its primary advantages was its inclusion of a DVD player; at the time of release, the PS2 was often cheaper than standalone DVD players, making it a Trojan horse for home entertainment in many households.

The PlayStation 2 received widespread critical acclaim upon release. A total of over 4,000 game titles were released worldwide, with over 1.5 billion copies sold. In 2004, Sony released a smaller, lighter revision of the console known as the PS2 Slim. Even after the release of its successor, the 3, it remained popular well into the seventh generation. It continued to be produced until 2013 when Sony finally announced that it had been discontinued after over twelve years of production, one of the longest lifespans of any video game console. By the end of its life, two new games were launched posthumously for the console.
;PCSX2:Started sometime in mid 2001, with its first release on March 23, 2002. It was the first PS2 emulator to boot games on Dec 19, 2002. Succeeding their earlier PCSX PlayStation emulator, PCSX2 dedicated its development to faithfully replicating the PS2 experience thanks to the continuous improvements focusing on compatibility and performance. In the last years, PCSX2 nightly builds boast a sleek, modern QT GUI and a pluginless design, eliminating the headaches of plugin configuration and making all features readily available. PCSX2 also has lots of enhancements and supports some of the #Hardware features and peripherals for the PlayStation 2.
It has multiple versions; The latest Google Play version, which contains ads, while an ad-free Alpha version can be downloaded directly from the AetherSX2 website. Development was stopped due to various dramas: developers calls it quits, shuts down site leaving a message citing "complaints, demands, and death threats" made to him during development process and it is no longer on the Google Play Store. Using NetherSX2 patches is heavily recommended.
::;NetherSX2:A quality-of-life patch for AetherSX2 created by Trixarian that removes AetherSX2's ads and implements new features for AetherSX2. There are two versions: The main version is a patch for AetherSX2 v1.5-4248, and there is a "Classic" version for patching AetherSX2 v1.5-3668. For licensing reasons, Trixarian originally released NetherSX2 as a patch for AetherSX2 with a tool to build and patch AetherSX2 v1.5-4248 (main) or v1.5-3668 (classic). By v2.0, NetherSX2 and NetherSX2 Classic are released as full APKs, so users will no longer have to build an APK. :;LRPS2: A complete hard fork of PCSX2 for RetroArch and its own separate emulator at this point, so there is no point in chasing after any kind of upstream and it is under development. Consider using standalone PCSX2 or XBSX2 builds instead, since those projects are more actively developed, some fixes, enhancements and hardware features haven't been implemented in this one. As a workaround, you can try the external Real-Time Corruptor (RTCV) tool.
Linux for PlayStation 2 (or PS2 Linux) is a kit released by Sony Computer Entertainment in 2002 that allows the PlayStation 2 console to be used as a personal computer similarly to OtherOS feature on PlayStation 3. It included a Linux-based operating system, a USB keyboard and mouse, a VGA adapter, a PS2 network adapter (Ethernet only), and a 40 GB hard disk drive (HDD). An 8 MB memory card is required; it must be formatted during installation, erasing all data previously saved on it, though afterwards the remaining space may be used for savegames.

*PCSX2 doesn't support Linux for PlayStation 2 emulation at the moment, according to the PCSX2 wiki. It likely requires MagicGate emulation and Full TLB Support to be implemented before further development can proceed.

Pressure-Sensitive Buttons
The DualShock 2 and DualShock 3 controllers feature analog sensors for all face buttons and the D-pad (excluding Start, Select, L3, and R3), allowing the console to register how hard a button is being pressed. While many PS2 games use the analog sticks or triggers for variable input, a select group of titles requires pressure-sensitive face buttons for core mechanics. Modern controllers (DualShock 4, DualSense, Xbox, Switch Pro) utilize digital face buttons. They are physically incapable of sensing pressure. For these controllers, users must map a "Pressure Modifier" button in PCSX2 settings to simulate a light press. Also you can map the button to a rarely used triggers if you want.

;Current Situation (PCSX2 PCSX2Ver stable version)
As of the move to the Qt6 interface and the integration of the SDL3 input backend, the process for using native pressure-sensitive hardware has been streamlined. Older situations and methods such as "XInput bridge" DLL method is now largely deprecated for modern builds.
* DualShock 3: Remains the most compatible hardware. It is natively supported via the SDL3 backend.
* DsHidMini: The recommended driver for DS3. It should be set to SXS (Sixaxis) Mode to allow PCSX2 to see the pressure axes correctly.
* DualShock 2: Requires a specialized adapter (e.g., Bliss-Box or high-end HID-compliant adapters). Generic "Blue Dual" USB adapters typically convert face buttons to digital signals, breaking this feature.
* Official Sony Driver: Support for the legacy PS Now (Sixaxis.sys) driver is considered legacy/deprecated. SDL3 is the modern standard for Qt builds.

:;Method 1 - DualShock 3
# Install DsHidMini.
# Set the HID Mode to SXS in the DsHidMini Control Pad.
# In PCSX2, navigate to Settings > Controllers.
# Ensure SDL is enabled under the "Global Settings" Input APIs ("Shared" universal input profile).
# Go to Controller Port 1, click Automatic Mapping, and select your controller under the SDL category (Use "Automatic Binding" button and select SDL).
#* Note: If successful, the binding list for Square, Cross, etc., will display as "Axis" or "Slider" inputs rather than simple "Button" inputs.

:;Method 2 - Digital Controllers (Xbox/PS5/Standard Third-Party)
:Since these lack the physical sensors, you must use a software workaround:
# In Controller Port 1 settings, find the Pressure Modifier binding.
# Map this to a rarely used button (e.g., R3 or a Bumper).
# Adjust the Modifier Amount (typically 30-50%) to define how "light" the simulated press is.
# In-game, hold the Modifier button while pressing a face button to perform "light" actions (like lowering a weapon in MGS3).

PS2's DVD player was a versatile and powerful feature for its time, it supports PlayStation2 format DVD-ROM, PlayStation 2 and PlayStation 1 format CD-ROM and offering great playback compatibility for the most common disc formats. While it lacked official support for DVD Audio and VCD, its ability to play DVD Video and Audio CDs, along with additional options like progressive scan and upscaling, made it a compelling choice for entertainment and multimedia playback. Also Interactive film/movie formats like DVDi and DVDPG supported. Lastly, PlayStation 2 supports both DVD5 (single-layer, 4.7 GB) and DVD9 (dual-layer, 8.5 GB) DVD-ROM discs. However, some users report encountering issues with DVD9 discs, particularly on older PS2 FAT models..
To begin with, when a disc is inserted the request goes through what's known as a 'mechacon'. This chip's firmware determines whether or not a disc is valid, or should be ignored. As mentioned above, you can have PS2 CD, PS2 DVD, PSX CD, DVD VIDEO and AUDIO CD. If none of those apply, the mechacon will ignore the request and return an error, which then results in the scary red 'eject the disc'. After it has been identified it then gets sent to the respective routine to process it;
DVD VIDEO; DVDDRV
Now, you might be asking yourself, what do each of those do? Well, PS2LOGO is the program responsible for decrypting the PS2 LOGO that you see on startup. Any failure will return you to the same red block error screen. PSXDRV is the PS2's native emulation system for PS1 titles. Since It doesn't run through PS2LOGO, there's no encryption, so you can hotswap on the browser and boot the games you own. DVDDRV is the DVD Player, running native on the EE/GS.
Accessories
Hard Disk Drive
:Wikipedia - PlayStation 2 Hard Disk Drive and compatible titles
The PS2 Hard Disk Drive was an official peripheral released by Sony for the PlayStation 2 console. It launched in July 2001 in Japan and March 2004 in North America. The HDD required the Network Adapter to function, because of this it's important to know that not all PS2 models supported the HDD. Only the fat models (SCPH-30000 to SCPH-50000 series) had the Expansion Bay needed to connect the Network Adapter for Hard Drive. As stated in the Network Adapter section, Slim models don't have an external interface to connect a Network Adaptor. Instead, the Ethernet functionality of the Network Adaptor has been integrated onto the motherboard, while the ATA/IDE interface was dropped, because of this slim models have no Hard Drive support.

PlayStation 2 Hard Drive offered;
*Ability to install and run Linux using Linux for PlayStation 2 disc
*Extra network functionalities, such as: accessing online content (game demos and updates etc) from platforms like PlayStation Broadband Navigator and PlayOnline Viewer. Also some of the titles such as: Pop'n Music Puzzle-dama Online requires an installation to the PS2 HDD in order to play, as the game boots from the PlayStation Broadband Navigator or HDD Utility Disc, and does not require the game disc or a registration code.

EyeToy
The EyeToy is a device similar to a camera or a webcam. It's an accessory developed by Sony and manufactured by Logitech. It is used in some PS2 games (such as SpongeBob SquarePants: Movin' with Friends) to interact physically through motion detection. The EyeToy device can be emulated with PCSX2. It also works natively with the PlayStation 3.

DVD Remote Control
:Wikipedia: DVD Remote Control
This peripheral is mainly used for playing DVD-Videos on the PlayStation 2. You can even play games with it as long they support digital control, but it's not ideal. There's a setting in the system configuration menu that says, "Remote Gameplay Function." Set this to on for playing games with this peripheral.

USB plugin for wxWidgets builds
Some PS2 games use a USB adapter with a module/dongle consisting of two jack ports for microphones. Installments from the SingStar series on the PS2 could use microphones (Sometimes bundled with these game discs) with this method.
:These adapters could either formally or informally be called:
* SingStar USB Converter (Official)
* SingStar USB Converter Box (Official)
* SingStar USB Microphone Converter
* SingStar Microphone USB Adapter/Converter
* SingStar USB Converter Microphone Adapter
Steering wheels are also supported for many racing games via a USB adapter.

While PCSX2 isn't benefiting from a working USB plugin in its original release, Jackun, a PCSX2 plugin author, made a USB plugin that supports a microphone in most games and even a steering wheel for racing games.
PSX
Not to be confused with the original PlayStation.

The PSX is a Sony digital video recorder with a fully integrated PS2 console. It was also the first device to use Sony's XrossMediaBar (XMB) graphical user interface, which was later used on the PlayStation Portable, the PlayStation 3, some Blu-ray Disc players, and 2008-era BRAVIA TVs.

None of the PSX features have been emulated yet.

Twitter user @DiscoStarslayer claims to be working on bypassing the HDD encryption of the PSX, which could result in this hardware being emulated, and it would allow for replacing the HDD in those consoles. This user also encourages dumping the content of the HDD of your PSX using a guide made by a PCSX2 contributor called 987123879113
Emulation issues
Despite a large interest in sixth generation consoles as a whole and the PlayStation 2 in particular, it is still one of the harder consoles to emulate for several reasons. The PlayStation 2's main CPU, the Emotion Engine, with its R5900-based core clocked at 294 MHz (299 MHz on later revisions), is well known for its complexity. Like the Sega Saturn, the EE includes many custom components such as the FPU co-processor, two Vector Units, and the Subsystem Interface (SIF), which together work asynchronously to comprise the 128-bit EE. Emulating them perfectly with correct timing requires an enormous amount of compute power. Additionally, the MIPS architecture, used by both the PlayStation and PlayStation 2, differs significantly from the x86 architecture used by modern PCs. Other factors, such as the complex graphics interface, memory interface, DMA unit, and IPU further contribute to the difficulties of emulating the EE.

:The EE was interesting for its era, particularly in its implementation of the Vector Units.
::VU0 was pivotal for physics calculations, including but not limited to, collision detection, object movement, and basic physics simulation. It could offload some of these calculations from the main CPU. This was because VU0 could process multiple data streams in parallel, speeding up calculations which was crucial during that era due to lots of physics-driven titles. VU0 was also used for tasks like AI calculations. Its ability to handle vector math made it suitable for complex algorithms that govern game logic, pathfinding, and character behavior. This capability was key for games to have responsive and dynamic AI without overly taxing the main processor.

::VU1 provided a level of programmability for both vertex and geometry processing at the hardware level. This approach contrasted with the predominantly fixed-function hardware pipelines of contemporary GPUs. NVIDIA initially focused on fixed-function hardware, which limited the flexibility in how vertex and pixel processing could be performed. However, the industry's shift towards more programmable graphics pipelines, which NVIDIA eventually adopted, this transition took years to align with a design philosophy akin to that of the PS2's VU1, highlighting the PS2's forward-thinking architecture. When it comes to emulation, particularly of the PS2's Vector Units (VUs), modern CPUs leverage SIMD (Single Instruction, Multiple Data) capabilities to enhance performance. SIMD allows a single instruction to operate on multiple data points simultaneously, mirroring the parallel processing nature of the VUs. Emulators can map VU operations to SIMD instructions, such as using SSE or AVX on x86 architectures for vector operations like additions, which can significantly boost emulation efficiency while striving to maintain the accuracy of the original PS2 hardware behavior. However, this requires a nuanced understanding of the VU's functionality to correctly handle edge cases, timing, and the PS2's unique floating-point operations, which do not strictly adhere to the IEEE 754 standard.

: That is why it's important to mention the challenges of emulating the PlayStation 2's floating-point unit (FPU), because it doesn’t follow the IEEE standard. To keep it simple, just changing a couple of numbers will cause glitches to occur to the game’s graphic (VU1) and logic (VU0 and EE), resulting in things like broken AI, odd behaviors, and/or graphical bugs. While PCSX2 allows for either clamping/rounding as a solution to fix most of these glitches, it remains by far not the most accurate way to emulate the FPU. There is promising news: a new 'Soft FPU' is being developed, which aims to provide a more accurate emulation.

IOP (I/O Processor); MIPS R3000A (PS1 main processor) used in PS2 since SCPH-10000 to 700XX. Runs at a 36.864 MHz or a 33.8688 MHz (underclocked when in compatibility mode) clock speed. It is connected to an external 2 MB EDO-RAM chip. Later got replaced by a new IOP based around a PowerPC 405 core, but with an additional MIPS core. Handles peripheral devices, memory management, and other system tasks.

SPU2 (Sound Processing Unit 2); Dedicated to audio processing, including sound effects and music. Its unique architecture and real-time audio processing capabilities pose significant emulation hurdles.

MechaCon; Dedicated chip handles various tasks, including system security, game disc security, MagicGate, and KELF file decryption. MagicGate is an encryption technology embedded within specific memory cards, which is relies on the MechaCon chip for security functionalities. Emulating MagicGate presents unique challenges because replicating its encryption process and hardware verification can be difficult and raising concerns about copyright situation . There are PCSX2 forks for emulating MagicGate, but you need MagicGate keys. See Konami Python 2 and #DVD player sections.

To conclude, we come to Graphics Synthesizer (GS) and hardware rendering. The PlayStation 2’s graphics pipeline acts very differently from modern GPU cards, and emulating it in hardware mode with any degree of accuracy is difficult. This is due in part to the versatility of the system: the fact that it doesn’t use fixed shaders, or that even the games themselves do not use a consistent formula to achieve different graphical effects.

:The PS2's Graphics Synthesizer (GS) boasted a theoretical pixel fill rate of up to 2.4 gigapixels per second and a peak texel fill rate of 1.2 gigatexels per second for single-textured games. This was largely due to the PlayStation 2's architecture, which featured a 2,560-bit data bus and, despite having only 4 MB of embedded DRAM (eDRAM), achieved an extraordinarily high bandwidth of approximately 48 GB/s. This allowed for exceptional high fill rate performance during its time. The design focused on moving data quickly between components, enabling developers to achieve complex visual effects through brute force bandwidth. This allowed for effects that were missing or challenging on PCs of that era. For instance, it was capable of rendering effects like heat haze, which was notably seen in games like "Gran Turismo 3". This effect involved techniques like read-modify-write operations on the frame buffer, which the PS2 could perform at a very fast rate due to its high bandwidth.

:That's where emulation comes in handy, isn't it? While PCSX2 no longer uses plugins, and GS emulation has significantly improved in recent years, there are still a considerable amount of games that require software rendering, which significantly increasing the CPU single-threaded performance requirements for emulation and eliminating certain visual enhancement options. There is a new project called "paraLLEl-GS" announced, similarly to other compute shader renderers, the end goal of this project is to be a no-compromises PS2 graphics emulation, i.e., retain the accuracy of a CPU software renderer while supporting upscaling / super-sampling and be fast enough to do so on modest GPU hardware. ParaLLEl-GS builds of PCSX2 is provided in the emulators section, also implemented to LRPS2 core.
:PlayStation 2 also used every 'dirty CRT trick' in the book. Dithering/low color depth, full screen blur/proto-FXAA, less than 480 lines and interlacing... it's all here. These methods, while effective on CRTs, lead to significant lack of visual sharpness on modern displays. Therefore, enhancement implementations like shaders and deinterlacing are crucial in PlayStation 2 emulation.
