Virtual Reality (VR) is a way to experience virtual environments in 3D. Often with a head-mounted display and some form of input tracking. Some new emulators and forks of established emulators have support for VR headsets. This allows you to play systems which was designed for 2D viewing in 3D (NES, GameCube) and some systems which was designed for 3D viewing are now possible to emulate as they were originally intended to play (Virtual Boy).
