Many new interesting devices have been released recently, for instance MiST, RetroUSB AVS or Nt mini. I guess a new section would be really useful. Related links:

== Adding links to more content pages on the main page ==
 +
I think it would improve the wiki and make it more accessible to everyone, if we added links on the main page to more content pages that don't have a link yet. I can't do it myself though, so I'd appreciate if someone else considered doing it. I have looked up all content pages at https://emulation.gametechwiki.com/index.php?title=Special:AllPages&hideredirects=1 and I have made a list of most of the ones that aren't yet linked on the main page, excluding all that focus on specific emulators and a few more that I thought were better off staying inside other links. Also, there's at least 2 pages on this list that aren't linked from any other page, [[GPD_XD_Devices]] and [[Thread_template]]. Here's the list:

== New main page ==
 +
I've been thinking about remaking the main page. I'll probably create a separate WIP page to test it out.
 +
There's mainly two reasons:
 +
* Make it easier to contribute to the wiki - this might be things like highlighting high priority tasks on the main page
 +
* Different layout of emulators - I've been thinking about separating console, computers and arcade emulators.
 +
Let me know if you got any suggestions. -[[User:Jpx|Jpx]] ([[User talk:Jpx|talk]]) 06:48, 14 November 2020 (UTC)

== Quality control ==
 +
Some pages are of subpar quality or outdated. I think we need some better way of quality control.
 +
Perhaps something like Wikipedias [[wikipedia:wikipedia:Content_assessment|Content assessment]] & [[wikipedia:wikipedia:Vital_articles|Vital aritcles]] or something like PCGamingWiki?
 +
A way to go thru all pages, add a category or template and then be able to list all pages that needs fixing. Perhaps we should rate the quality of all pages? -[[User:Jpx|Jpx]] ([[User talk:Jpx|talk]]) 06:48, 14 November 2020 (UTC)
 +
:[[Template:WIP|<nowiki>{{WIP}}</nowiki>]], [[Template:Outdated|<nowiki>{{Outdated}}</nowiki>]] and [[Template:stub|<nowiki>{{stub}}</nowiki>]] take care of the real subpar ones, and for the rest I think it'd be best to keep it simple by either adding [[:Category:Article_complete|Category:Article_complete]] or [[:Category:Article_incomplete|Category:Article_incomplete]] to the page.
 +

== Data Loss (2021-07-03) ==
 +
Yesterday on the 2nd the wiki's database got corrupted, and I was unable to restore it. Due to an issue with mySQL logging, the server's drive was also completely full so backups of the database weren't being made. Because of these issues I've had to roll the wiki back to the most recent offline backup I had, which unfortunately is 6 months old. So to everyone who made edits in the past 6 months, I'm very sorry, I've lost those contributions.

 +
I believe I've fixed the issue with mySQL, and will be checking the server's status and making offline backups more regularly, as well as using a service to backup the server's instance in full. --[[User:SonofUgly|SonofUgly]] ([[User talk:SonofUgly|talk]]) 22:18, 3 July 2021 (UTC)

== TODO lists for each page? ==

There's no section for emulators that run on iOS, Blackberry, etc. I could fill that section in like the Android one, but just wondering if it's worthwhile or not.
+
I think it'd be a good idea to add TODO lists to the talk pages of each console page. It'd help us keep track of things like which emulators need to be tested and added.

Should we rename "mobile" on each of the system's pages to "android" since that seams to be what it is referring to and could confuse people with ios, windows phone, etc. 10 Feb 2015

:::I think listing the OS in the table is pretty clear, and the emulators listed aren't all just for Android (the majority are, but that's because most people here use Android and don't use iOS/WP8) so you'd have to remove information. Could the admin change it to a nice simple darker style? It looks quite nice. It's the style of the old Wikia. - The Red Sniper.
+
Should we get rid of iOS’s &amp;Dagger;? While it’s still in very early development, touchHLE is already able to run at least one commercial app and it looks very promising, but it’s still a far cry from what we usually would call mobile device emulation – it’s ''very'' high-level, and it’s more of an iOS substitute that runs alongside a CPU emulator. The iOS itself isn’t even planned to be supported. I personally think that the ability to run apps should alone be grounds to consider the iOS emulated, but I can see how that could be controversial. :Here's a darker style that I use: [http://userstyles.org/styles/97180/gametechwiki-emu-gen-dark Userstyles]. It's left default as a lot of people complained about the white on grey. --[[User:SonofUgly|SonofUgly]] ([[User talk:SonofUgly|talk]]) 17:54, 27 March 2014 (EDT)
+
It’s been a week and nobody replied, so, considering that systems like the PS4 and Super A’Can don’t have it even though the current state of their emulation is barely practical, I’ll take iOS’s off for now. [[User:Rariteh|rariteh]] ([[User talk:Rariteh|talk]]) 05:22, 13 February 2023 (UTC)

== Assumption of "Computers" category? ==

There's a list under a "Computers" category. Perhaps this is known, '''but all video game consoles are computers.''' A 1978 calculator is a computer. The TVs that your parents watched when they were kids were computers(most likely). I think this is kind of differentiating people's ideas of what "computer" means, and is not a good way to describe "non-gaming purpose" computers.
+
== How about some drastic changes? ==

This, I feel, further dumbs down the general populations' knowledge of technology by calling 'X' a computer, but then telling them their smartphone or such is a "phone, not a 'PC/computer!'"
+
How about no recommendation from now on? Also providing "compatibility" column instead of "accuracy" so there will be no confusion.<br/>
 +
I mean we're already providing info about [[PlayStation_emulators#Hardware_Features_and_Peripherals|hardware feature support, peripherals]], [[PlayStation_emulators#Arcade_variations|variations]], [[PlayStation_emulators#Enhancements|enhancements]] and compatibility. Wiki users should decide their own favorite, no? Otherwise, it will be total mess like [[Game_Boy/Game_Boy_Color_emulators#Emulators]].

Perhaps I should give some better replacements:

They used to have their own page and easily accessible. Now they are listed with Pong and other chips, and not even listed under the "Personal Computers" section (its namesake) of home page, which is where people look for PC emulators.

:Seems pedantic. Sure consoles, calculators, phones, etc. are computers, but you place a phone, SNES, and personal computer/home computer/desktop PC/whatever next to each other and then ask someone to turn on the 'Computer', they're not gonna touch the phone or the SNES.<br>"Non-gaming computer emulators" - plenty of people gamed on their DOS computers. I'm a bit disappointed to see that nobody is getting where I'm coming from. I am aware of what most people call them, but the terminology is what I propose that we go against and come up with a new way of describing these computers without making anything contrasting/different to them as "less of a computer" in the eyes of society. When someone says their smartphone is not a computer, that's someone ignorant to what a computer is (or what defines as a computer). When we further that agenda here we are just fueling that same mindset that's wrong. This is why I said let's come up with a way of categorizing these systems in a way that doesn't reflect negatively on the view of what constitutes a computer in the other categories. Just because "everyone says 'X' things are 'Y'" doesn't mean we should stray along with common beliefs. Just consider this: Is Playstation 3 a computer? Yep. It has a microprocessor, RAM, a GPU. Does your "PC" have a microprocessor, RAM, and a GPU? Yep. Based on the latter, we can confirm that Playstation 3 is no less a computer than your desktop build ... or Gameboy Color ... or Atari even (same fundamentals, just with very limited resources). Do you consider your PS3, Vita, etc. to be "personal"? If you do, it's technically a "personal computer". This is why I'm arguing semantics here where it counts. The "PC" has no real meaning/definition ... find me one that defines what exactly makes something a "PC" and what makes it not one. People often consider "anything sitting on their desk that runs Windows" to be a PC, even though plenty of us know that OS X is compiled for the exact same architecture, has drivers for the same GPUs, and has a platform almost identical to that Windows/Linux/etc. runs on. It's just a thought, of course.

: I also found this: http://curiosity.discovery.com/question/what-term-personal-computer "General operation by a single user." That tells us that the way most people think of it is not historically correct. You can research what IBM considered "PC" to mean, and how that has evolved and misled millions of people now who think "PC" constitutes form factor or don't even know what the hell it means ... just that they know it means whatever the "smarter" person tells them it means. This is why I feel that terminology matters more than bullet-biting and just using the "common" (and also wrongly believed) terminology for it.

- The issue here is "Brick Game 9999-in-1" is a very vague name and they are like millions of variations of this kind of Tetris stuff back in the 1990s. I recommend you put the "General Emulation" section to top as opposed to having these sections in alphabetical order since I believe "General Emulation" contains devices and systems much more people care about and are interested in and this also doesn't make the new design that much more foreign to the old one?

== Is the FAQ section getting crowded? ==
+
To make sure this category doesn't bloated with too many Games, Software and Hardware, the rules below need to be followed.
For example the 'CRT monitors' 'CRT TVs' pages can just go into the 'Display FAQ' page because this seems pretty redundant, and the 'PSP Eboots' page seems pretty pointless as is too, I would just put a section about converting PS1 games to Eboots in the 'Ripping Games' page since we have that already, the rest of the 'PSP Eboots' page are just download links so put those in 'ROM/ISO Sites' page. Just some ideas for cleaning up the FAQs section. --[[User:Special|Special]]

:Sounds good to me. A few of them (the CRT links in particular) are actually already detailed and otherwise linked in the Displays page, so those should be a fairly easy job. [[User:Murrigan|Murrigan]] ([[User talk:Murrigan|talk]]) 12:49, 1 December 2014 (EST)

:::The guide neglects to mention very important things, but I don't see why an improved article wouldn't be appropriate here. Most importantly, the guide does not inform readers that some of the conversions are irreversible. Once a clean X360 .iso or DS rom gets trimmed following the instructions in the guide, it is irreversible. The data that is removed is garbage/padding data, and the game still works the same in emulators after conversion, but nonetheless it makes it an imperfect copy of the game. I have personally encountered downloads where important data such as music or video has been ripped out of the game to save space, so I understand that some are uncomfortable with removing any data at all, even if it is garbage/padding data; it is not archive-quality. The compression the guide mentions for gamecube, wii, and PS2 is perfectly reversible though. :I'm thinking of something more tactful in theory. Think about how useful a phone number is to a hub relating to emulation and emulators; nobody's gonna be calling emu-devs for assistance... the open-source software often includes an anti-warranty bit saying creators are not obligated to help people if they have problems with the software. So why do we need phone numbers here anyways? Why not set up a bot or an extension that tracks this kind of activity, either revert if it's done on an existing page, or delete if it's the only revision, and then just block the IP or user indefinitely? Even if they create tons of sockpuppets or switch IP addresses, its of no advantage to them simply because the act of doing it would get them blocked. If there isn't something like that that currently exists elsewhere, then we may actually have a problem. Also, the captcha in place can easily be macro'd around since it only asks two questions. *How about making some changes to how we present latest version and active status for emulators in tables?

It has been over 3 months since http://emu-russia.net/en/ has released any information on the news section of their website. While I get the feeling the page owner will make a return at some point, perhaps it might be a good idea to add other sources to our news section so as to keep the main page up to date.
+
Maybe include a date for the last update, like 2024-03-09?

[https://www.zophar.net/ Zophar's domain] is an extensive emulation archival website that posts news daily. The layout of their news section seems to be similar in fashion to emu-russia.net and has been consistently updated for the past 10 years.
+
Maybe use a template for the download links, so it's easily updated and can be mirrored on multiple pages?

My question being, is it possible to join  both headlines together on Emugen's main news section so that news from both sites can be shown side-by-side? Is this even a good idea?

:::Game engine recreations like ScummVM / ResidualVM (multi game engines in that case), and single game engines recreations such as: URDE (Metroid Prime), Open Tomb, CannonBall, etc. As for source ports they are used in the same way emulators and game engine recreations are used for: to play games on new systems they were not designed for. For me the biggest difference between a game engine recreation and a source port is that one is reverse engineered and the other one uses the original source code, such as: GZDoom --[[User:Jpx|Jpx]] ([[User talk:Jpx|talk]]) 07:19, 20 September 2018 (EDT)

However a lookup on [http://redump.org/disc/2250/ Redump] shows only one track, so that doesn't seem to be the case. If the img file is just a binary copy of the disc the same way a bin file is when paired with a [[Cue sheet (.cue)|cue sheet]], then one thing you could try is renaming the .img file to .iso and then loading it through RetroArch. If that doesn't work, you will need to convert it to a bin/cue pair using a program like ccd2cue. -[[User:FosterHaven|FosterHaven]] ([[User talk:FosterHaven|talk]]) 15:36, 24 December 2018 (EST)

== Can we please add a detailed "Super Game Boy" emulation page to help clear some confusion. ==

The confusing part I don't understand and never seems explained in detail on the emulator faqs - I have "sgb enhanced roms" and they work as they should. But any original gb game played in a real sgb will get the added special color palette when played on a Super Game Boy, so when these emulators say they can play "super game boy games" it is only the "sgb enhanced roms" they can play, and they never add the special color palette to normal gb roms. (Only maybe higan can do this correctly?) I think this should be explained in better detail on Game Boy emulator faqs, or the emulation wikia.

Please and thanks for any information.

If you are looking for something to do, check the Getting involved page. There's also a Getting involved talk page.

Adding links to more content pages on the main page

I think it would improve the wiki and make it more accessible to everyone, if we added links on the main page to more content pages that don't have a link yet. I can't do it myself though, so I'd appreciate if someone else considered doing it. I have looked up all content pages at https://emulation.gametechwiki.com/index.php?title=Special:AllPages&hideredirects=1 and I have made a list of most of the ones that aren't yet linked on the main page, excluding all that focus on specific emulators and a few more that I thought were better off staying inside other links. Also, there's at least 2 pages on this list that aren't linked from any other page, GPD_XD_Devices and Thread_template. Here's the list:

-188.114.111.202 18:11, 16 April 2020 (UTC)

Thanks. I'll start adding some. -Jpx (talk) 05:52, 17 April 2020 (UTC)
Thank you. That was fast. -188.114.111.160 09:22, 17 April 2020 (UTC)
More of those have been added on MainPageWIP page. - WebMint (talk) 02:27, 25 November 2021 (UTC)

New main page

I've been thinking about remaking the main page. I'll probably create a separate WIP page to test it out. There's mainly two reasons:

  • Make it easier to contribute to the wiki - this might be things like highlighting high priority tasks on the main page
  • Different layout of emulators - I've been thinking about separating console, computers and arcade emulators.

Let me know if you got any suggestions. -Jpx (talk) 06:48, 14 November 2020 (UTC)

Will it still be remade? - WebMint (talk) 17:17, 19 July 2021 (UTC)

Quality control

Some pages are of subpar quality or outdated. I think we need some better way of quality control. Perhaps something like Wikipedias Content assessment & Vital aritcles or something like PCGamingWiki? A way to go thru all pages, add a category or template and then be able to list all pages that needs fixing. Perhaps we should rate the quality of all pages? -Jpx (talk) 06:48, 14 November 2020 (UTC)

{{WIP}}, {{Outdated}} and {{stub}} take care of the real subpar ones, and for the rest I think it'd be best to keep it simple by either adding Category:Article_complete or Category:Article_incomplete to the page.
We should also have something to check against, so how about Emulation General Wiki:Guidelines as a guide. --SonofUgly (talk) 03:55, 6 July 2021 (UTC)

Data Loss (2021-07-03)

Yesterday on the 2nd the wiki's database got corrupted, and I was unable to restore it. Due to an issue with mySQL logging, the server's drive was also completely full so backups of the database weren't being made. Because of these issues I've had to roll the wiki back to the most recent offline backup I had, which unfortunately is 6 months old. So to everyone who made edits in the past 6 months, I'm very sorry, I've lost those contributions.

I believe I've fixed the issue with mySQL, and will be checking the server's status and making offline backups more regularly, as well as using a service to backup the server's instance in full. --SonofUgly (talk) 22:18, 3 July 2021 (UTC)

TODO lists for each page?

I think it'd be a good idea to add TODO lists to the talk pages of each console page. It'd help us keep track of things like which emulators need to be tested and added.

Side note, is there a way we can test the accuracy of NES and FDS emulation? Like determine if accuracy is low, midrange, high, or cycle accurate? ~Charlie OrphanedPixel (talk) 20:05, 27 July 2021 (UTC)

Hello, on the Fightcade page, its title should be "Fightcade", not "FightCade", if it could be changed, thanks. -ludg1e https://emulation.gametechwiki.com/index.php/FightCade

iOS and touchHLE

Should we get rid of iOS’s &Dagger;? While it’s still in very early development, touchHLE is already able to run at least one commercial app and it looks very promising, but it’s still a far cry from what we usually would call mobile device emulation – it’s very high-level, and it’s more of an iOS substitute that runs alongside a CPU emulator. The iOS itself isn’t even planned to be supported. I personally think that the ability to run apps should alone be grounds to consider the iOS emulated, but I can see how that could be controversial. rariteh (talk) 05:42, 6 February 2023 (UTC)

It’s been a week and nobody replied, so, considering that systems like the PS4 and Super A’Can don’t have it even though the current state of their emulation is barely practical, I’ll take iOS’s off for now. rariteh (talk) 05:22, 13 February 2023 (UTC)

"Compatibility" column for each page?

Example;

Name Platform(s) Latest Version GB/GBC NDS Single

I'm cool with it if others are, also you could remove the Libretro column since you added libretro to all the Latest Version columns. - OldManKain (talk) 05:28, 28 March 2023 (UTC)

How about some drastic changes?

How about no recommendation from now on? Also providing "compatibility" column instead of "accuracy" so there will be no confusion.
I mean we're already providing info about hardware feature support, peripherals, variations, enhancements and compatibility. Wiki users should decide their own favorite, no? Otherwise, it will be total mess like Game_Boy/Game_Boy_Color_emulators#Emulators.

Name Platform(s) Version Arcade
Variations
Hardware Features
and Peripherals
Enhancements Compatibility FLOSS Active
DuckStation Windows Linux macOS Preview
Latest
Legacy*
SwanStation
~ ~xx%
of tested titles.
Mednafen Windows Linux macOS FreeBSD 1.32.0-UNSTABLE
Beetle/Beetle HW

XEBRA Windows v221106 ~ ~xx%

Ahayri (talk) 00:39, 30 October 2023 (UTC)

I like combining "Arcade variations", "Hardware features and peripherals" and "Enhancements" into one column each. Compatibility column sounds good, but maybe keep accuracy. I don't like removing recommendations, instead we should remove some of the recommended on the GB page (and on other pages), try to keep it to as few as possible recommend by following the rules on the Recommended emulators page, should be around two-three recommended only. -Jpx (talk) 10:04, 30 October 2023 (UTC)

Why are x86 emulators placed on the Pong page?

They used to have their own page and easily accessible. Now they are listed with Pong and other chips, and not even listed under the "Personal Computers" section (its namesake) of home page, which is where people look for PC emulators.

Wouldn't it be better to create a specific x86 page?

- The issue here is "Brick Game 9999-in-1" is a very vague name and they are like millions of variations of this kind of Tetris stuff back in the 1990s. It's better just listed in "Dedicated consoles" or "Strange & forgotten consoles" if decided to be included in this Wiki rather than having its own page or even in the Main Page. Put "General Emulation" section first

I recommend you put the "General Emulation" section to top as opposed to having these sections in alphabetical order since I believe "General Emulation" contains devices and systems much more people care about and are interested in and this also doesn't make the new design that much more foreign to the old one?

  • Was done, thanks.
  • Edit: WTF is the new sections design now? So many random stuff and big things like Android, iOS and etc. are sooo way down the bottom, the new design doesn't make good sense at all.

Endangered Category Rules

To make sure this category doesn't bloated with too many Games, Software and Hardware, the rules below need to be followed.

  • Games, Software and Hardware must have their own page
  • They must be historically significant
  • Their page must give a reason why their significant & endangered
  • They must be Undumped and or Undocumented

(Note about the last one: The concern is not that these Games, Software and Hardware are Unemulated \ Unsimulated, the concern is they haven't been dumped and or documented.)

Any Games, Software or Hardware that don't pass the four rules check, gets be added to the Endangered list

adding "Protoweb" and "WaybackProxy" projects to "Not really emulators section?

These are quite useful for "PC operating systems (OS)" section (DOS-based, Windows 1.0x/2x/3x series, Windows 9x series, Windows NT series and MacOS). I'm not sure which section is the right place for these proxy projects.

OC column for each system?

Similar to "Texture/Sprite Replacement" and "RIR" columns i think now its time to add "OC" column for each of these pages;

68000 Clock Divider for Genesis: Supported by BlastEm and MAME.
Adjusting blitter speed for Jaguar/Jaguar CD: Supported by BigPEmu.
Adjusting CPU Clock Speed for 3DO: Supported by opera_libretro / 4DO.
Virtual cpu clock control for original Xbox: Supported by xemu PR[1467].
Extra scanlines of processing? for NES and SNES emulators

Done. (see #enhancement section for each page)

Hybrid DVD player/gaming systems

Nuon, Panasonic Q and PSX (DVR) needs to be in "hybrid" category, right?

win9x, dos or other "ancient" emulators

for example: nesticle is still in the Nintendo_Entertainment_System_emulators page, i think we should only keep these older emulators in History_of_emulation and Emulators_on_DOS pages. Ahayri (talk) 18:32, 21 December 2023 (UTC)

Changing latest version, active status, and download in tables

  • How about making some changes to how we present latest version and active status for emulators in tables?

Maybe include a date for the last update, like 2024-03-09?

Maybe use a template for the download links, so it's easily updated and can be mirrored on multiple pages?

Other suggestions? -Jpx (talk) 14:29, 9 March 2024 (UTC)

  • I like the idea, but I would like to know how we might create a template for the download links in the event that the links have distinct domain names and may dynamically change. Chipsum (✉️) 18:08, 11 March 2024 (UTC)
  • I've been thinking the same thing actually, i've also been thinking the website could benefit from some minor design changes. For example, left and right columns are huge problem to the large tables, these wide columns making the large tables feel even more cumbersome. Even the MainPageWIP page utilizes these large columns: https://imgur.com/a/ZnBH3PA Ahayri (talk) 17:39, 12 March 2024 (UTC)
  • The right column is fixable, the left one is part of mediawiki default design, I am a webdev I can solve that but I don't know who is the webmaster it's up to @SonofUgly. As for the tables I am wrapping them between <div style="overflow-x:auto">, this will make the table responsive on mobile (and also on any viewport) it will create an overflow if it overflow's the page's container and adds horizontal scrolling bars on PC and on mobile you swap left and right to scroll the table (without any change to the page).Chipsum (✉️) 12:11, 13 March 2024 (UTC)

I propose this header colors and style

  • So what do you say, I am thinking of removing the right td which contains the 4chan thread (and place it somewhere else)

  • Some of the most beautifully designed mediawikis, to be inspired by [3]
  • I suggest that the icons precede the name:

InfoBox

I suggest this style for infoboxes, colors are demonstrative only you can change them or probably we make a variety of colored infoboxes,
I replaced the caption with a span inside the infobox, with a background color to make it look like a caption.
if all is ok, we still need the confirmation of the webmaster, since it's not possible to change the css of an infobox without accessing css files for it.
